Apprentice Engine Tester Review

I work in research and development for Jaguar Land Rover at Whitley in Coventry, specializing in Engine Testing. I go through different departments during the apprenticeship within Engine Test, learning the key skills which will allow me to complete the job competently once I have finished the apprenticeship. I work within several teams, so teamwork is a key part of my job.

I have learned a huge amount of new skills on the apprenticeship, and have also developed existing skills. I have learned to work in a fast paced adult environment quickly, which is key. I have studied an extended level 3 diploma in engineering, an NVQ level 3 and am now completing a sponsored HNC in engineering.

I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship at Jaguar Land Rover. I have learned a great deal and been put through a good level of education while being paid a good wage. There is a good culture within Jaguar Land Rover, and I have a good variety of work to complete. The brilliant thing about working in engine test is that there is always something new to learn.

I feel very valued by Jaguar Land Rover. In addition to being put through my level three extended diploma in engineering and an NVQ level 3, I am being put through a sponsored HNC in engineering. They have invested a huge amount in me, which makes me feel recognized and valued by the company. I am regularly involved in projects and put through training courses.

The programme I am on within engine test is very well organised. Unlike many other departments, we have our own internal training team and mentors who look out for us. Our development is their main priority, which makes me feel valued. There is a great deal of support available to me for both study and my personal life.

I receive a lot of support from my training provider. I have regular meetings with my work based learning manager to ensure that I am up to date with work and progressing through the apprenticeship well. I can also voice any concerns that I may have during this meeting. I am given support and guidance with my NVQ level 3.

I receive a large amount of support from my employer. They pay for me to attend college and are also sponsoring me on a higher national certificate in engineering. This makes me feel valued by the company. I have my own mentor that I can go to with any concerns or issues that I may have, and have a training team that support me and my development.

My salary meets and exceeds my costs by a large amount. I currently live at home with my parents, so my living costs are minimal. My wage has increased by approximately 10% every 6 months assuming that I meet my performance targets. I have met every target, so I am now earning approximately £450 per week after tax. Travel costs are minimal as Whitley is relatively local to me.

There are many opportunities outside of work. Jaguar Land Rover operates an employee learning scheme, which offers £200 a year towards any learning course. There are many different courses to choose from. In the past, I have completed an advanced driving course and a fear of flying course. The company will also allow a few days of unpaid leave to complete volunteering activities too.

I would recommend Jaguar Land Rover to a friend because the work is interesting and challenging. There is a great amount of support available and opportunities to learn new skills. The pay and benefits are excellent, with a very generous holiday package. Jaguar Land Rover care for their employees and invest in them. The work environment is friendly and enjoyable.

If applying for an apprenticeship at Jaguar Land Rover, I would suggest practicing many aptitude tests. The key is to show how eager you are to learn and give back to the company. They want to see that you are interested in the work that they complete and that you really want the job. There is an assessment day, which consists of a variety of tasks, including group work and communication skills.
