  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently undertaking a control engineer placement within my apprenticeship of which I undertake various issues through the day relating to machine code. I look at the modifications of PLC's and Networking across the facility. I also undertake various project throughout my apprenticeship, the most recent being a team improvement circle project. As a degree apprentice you are expected to manage your own workloads and projects

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, throughout my time at in the apprenticeship I will gain a foundation degree in engineering and a BEng in applied engineering. Alongside this I will also be working towards an NVQ through some of the projects that I have undertaken at Jaguar Land Rover. Within the business I have also been placed on multiple training courses to further my knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work that I have so far been completing within the apprenticeship as it's good to see your work actually being implemented within the business. Within my team, people are happy to help clarify my knowledge in issues that I don't understand. The culture at Jaguar Land Rover is a great place to help you grow as an individual.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel valued by my employer and regularly have reviews to review my progress. Every 2 – 3 months I will undertake a review with my work based learning manager whom of which will track my behaviour. He also ensures that I am progressing according to my targets. When I am progress well, it will be fed back by my manager.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the program is well organised and is set according to the job role that you will be undertaking when you return to plant. I will have multiple meetings with my work based learning manager to gain feedback and support from them. College has a structured approach to learning.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The college that I currently attend provided me with plenty of support with my education. If I am every struggle there are multiple people that I can talk to within the college. They also provide classes outside of working hours to ensure that any further questions can be clarified if needed.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support from my employer. I have regular meetings with my line manager to track performance. If I have any issues they are always available to talk. The HR team within the company are also easy to reach and are helpful when you first join to help you set everything up.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The Salary at Jaguar Land Rover is very high for an apprenticeship wage. You get 6 monthly pay rises as long as you meet the set requirement e.g. getting high enough scores for tests, ensure you are of a high enough level in your behavioral review. Salary easily covers rent and other needs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of extra-curricular activities outside work of which you can participate in. I am currently participating in a team improvement circle project of which we have looked at an improvement inside of work and then put planning in place to help improve it. I will then present this at a local convention.

  • Yes

  • JLR has so far been a good company to work for with plenty of new and upcoming opportunities


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Ensure that you show an interesting in engineering outside of the school/college.
