Tool Maker Review

Im a tool maker/tool maintenance so on a daily basis I will work on press tools. This can be anything from welding to polishing. Occasionally there are jobs that will require you to mill or turn so it is a very interesting job. For the first 2 years I am based at a training centre then after that I will go back to site and continue to work on tools. I have been involved in a project about changing parking stops over.

I have learnt many new skills. I have learnt things about business improvement, engineering applications of maths, how moors work, how to use many different machines like millers, lathes, surface grinders and more. I also have learnt a lot in my BTEC about planning and creating projects, different applications and properties of materials, mechanical and electronic principles. I have been put on to a training course that enabled me to drive an overhead crane.

I enjoy my program because it fully prepares me for life in the industry. I am well taught at a training centre and I get to integrate with people with similar interests to me. The company has a vast culture and supplies to people all over the world.

I feel very valued by Jaguar Land Rover as I am always informed on any changes in the company and I am always helped if I have any issues. My supervisor is really supportive of the jobs I have carried out and gave me positive feedback about them and shown appreciation by showing other people how good the job I did actually was. This made me feel very valued in my department.

The Jaguar Land Rover apprenticeship is well structured as a whole. The induction week was held at the richo arena and we went to different seminars following the timetables they had created for us on the app. I am also having regular meetings discussing my progress with my internal training manager. The training centre was not very well organised as when we have gone to some courses they haven't been set up yet. So a lot of shuffling around was required at the training centre. When I am at plant it is very well structured as they have created a plan for me to follow with tasks I will be doing to develop my skills as a tool maker.

You can easily receive support with any issues. You can speak to your tutors, centre manager, internal training manager and your student liaison officer. They have a very welcoming attitude when it comes to receiving support and most of the time nothing is too much for them. If you are ever struggling with anything the tutor will come over and support and encourage you to ensure you complete the ask to the best of your ability.

The salary meets my costs very well. I live very local the furthest I have to travel is 10 miles so the salary covers this quite easily. The training centre and plant have very well priced food and drinks so it is very affordable. I am paid hourly at jaguar land rover and get paid every Thursday. The salary increases every 6 months and occasionally there is a pay negotiation where you will get another pay rise and a little bonus. The starting salary is around £230 and every 6 months it increases by around 12%

There are not many opportunities to do things outside of work with regards to company events and activities. There are many opportunities for sports in my local area.

You can learn and get paid at the same time. With the qualifications you obtain you are set for life. There is also a job for you at the end of the apprenticeship and any opportunities for you progress after your apprenticeship. You also develop a good set of skills that can be applied anywhere. You also earn a very good salary at jaguar land rover and get discounts off ford, jlr and many other places so it is well worth coming to JLR. They also have a very good pension plan.

Do not get behind on work as it is hard to catch up. Apply early and don't worry about the assessment days. The interviewers are nice and friendly and will answer any questions you have about the task.
