  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Maintenance Engineer. Fixing broken down machines/robots. Performing preventative and reactive maintenance. Carrying out LEAN exercises to improve cost to the business. Working on both electrical and mechanical projects set by my line manager.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. We complete many sections whilst at our training centre. These skills include, milling, turning, welding, robotics, electrical, bench, behaviours, electronics and PLC.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is enjoyable. Although I did not specifically apply for this job role, the college and my peers are very supportive. Most of the tutors at the training centre are helpful and teach you their skill set.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I do feel valued by jaguar Land Rover. The apprentice programme is quite thorough and they are supportive in helping you with extra curricular activities. The benefits they offer are wide and accessible.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Programme is structured well. The first 2 years of the programme are predominantly college based. This is where you complete your btec and all of your work shop assignments. In the third and fourth year you are placed at a plant in a specific department. Communications between the employer and training centre are not always consistent.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot of support. The tutors are extremely helpful. My line manager and ITM are in consistent contact with me to check my progress and assess my attitude and behaviours.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As I am in the first couple of years I do not see my employer much as I am based at a training centre. The times where I have required assistance from my employer they have been very helpful.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Not very. We don’t receive any reimbursement for travel. Other apprentices at other companies receive hotel accommodations and money for food and they earn more money than we do. We do not receive any financial help regardless of how far away we live.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. To meet other apprentices, there has been a Facebook group set up. There are also various other social media platforms that can be used.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Good employer. They care about your studies and are keen to give you all of the training you ask for. They push you to reach your full potential and you are expected to behave at a high standard.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Be yourself in the interview. The apprentice interview is not about finding out about your engineering skills but more your teamwork and communication skills. Help others and do not be afraid to ask for help.
