I am an apprentice training to be an electrical fitter for UK power networks. This includes me completing training courses for my competences and going onsite to gain practical experience. We also have to complete the Duke of Edinburgh gold award.
There are many skills I’ve learnt during this apprenticeship. As well as training and gaining authorisation to work on the network, I am also trained in first aid. I also have fire and environmental awareness to name a few.
To the extent that I am learning something new everyday. I feel challenged and want to succeed in doing my job to the best standard
We are seen as very valued in the company as we are constantly told we are the future. This gives me motivation to work hard and progress
It is very well organised in the sense that we constantly know what we are doing and at what date. If there are any changes the company will tell us ahead of time. It can get overwhelming at times
I received good support from my training providers as they want us to be in the best state to complete our tasks
They are very helpful. If I have any troubles they are very helpful in finding solutions.
At 18 my costs are not very high. My salary for my age is excellent especially compared to others who don’t work for this company
We spend a lot of our time training and the training centres are far from home so we spend our weeknights in hotels. Any time we have on the weekends is used working towards our DofE. Their are barely any opportunities to take time off except bank holidays and the time we have onsite
Yes
As an apprentice we are constantly told that if we are willing to work hard then any opportunity is open to you. I would recommend to a friend as this feels like a secure job that allows for growth
It is important to be determined to work hard though this apprenticeship. I would also recommend getting into a work shop environment. This will help you greatly when performing tasks
