  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Taking on an Manufacturing Engineering role in different areas of the business. Currently based in the workshop so taking on different shop floor activities such as concessions and reworks. Also shadowing current MEs. Also, integrated into a different team in each business sector accordingly.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Gained a Level 3 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations (workshop based), currently training for Level 4 NVQ in Manufacturing Engineering (business based). Also studying for a FdSc in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering. Planning to do a BSc Top up. Learnt and developed people skills and presentation skills. Also how to work effectively with the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work side as well as the people. Everyone at Rolls-Royce has a similar view and work ethic. I have enjoyed all the teams I have worked for so far.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Rolls-Royce?
  • Sometimes I feel like only an apprentice and not valued as much as other team members but I am only a training ME compared to the other MEs. I have been put on real projects for things in the business that actually matter so that is good. There is also good appreciation from the managers and team members

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very good induction and support throughout the programme. First year is basic workshop training, next 2/3 years are business placements. Regular 10 week reviews are held with Apprentice Development Leader. There is also constant support from your team of other apprentices or "flightdeck"

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Generally good support from ADL (see above question) and good communication from them. Also weekly drop in sessions are hosted by the ADL to allow for regular problems to be addressed.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • HR are always available via the phone. As well as this, very good support from a disability and mental health perspective. Manager is also friendly and accessible. Good support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is higher in competitors (12k start for Rolls-Royce, 19k start for JLR). Salary could be better as many apprentices have to rent in Derby for a job. Travelling is good/cheap. Socially Derby isn't fantastic but is bearable.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Lots of STEM and careers events that take place throughout the year. Also the Apprentice and Graduate Association acts as a student union for apprentices.

  • 9. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Degree is paid for. Prestigious and good company to work for. Lots of opportunities.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • Show off your honesty, integrity and determination. Rolls-Royce looks at the people more than the grades when applying. Be 200% your personality.
