Higher Manufacturing Engineering Apprentice Review

As a manufacturing engineering apprentice I assist the manufacturing process to try and find improvements and reduce the ammount of defects. As a first year apprentice I have been in training college working towards a level 2 NVQ and a HNC one day a week. They NVQ is more practicle engineering where you learn the basics of milling, turning and cnc programing and machining, while the HNC is more theory based where you learn about different modules such as engineering science, fluid mechanics, materials and a project.

While at training school I have learned alot of practicle skills such as turning, milling and cnc programs while learning how different materials behave and why you would use a certain material over another. The HNC continues on from your level 3 qualification which will allow you to continue onto a HND or degree level

I have enjoyed every day of my program so far at training college as I am learning new skills which I will later be putting to use when working in company.

Having not spent much time at Rolls-Royce as I am on full time off the job training I feel very valued. I have been invited to meetings within the company reguarding future plans for pay and other benefits.

The training college can sometimes be unorganised but they gave us a training plan at the start of the year which they stuck too pretty well. The HNC is very organised leaving you enough time to complete the questions and have tutorial time to complete other tasks.

The teachers at the training college give you so much support as long as you ask for it. They are more than happy to help.

Having been on off the job training I have only had contact with the training college when it comes to work.

As a first year apprentice doing off the job training the salary is quite good. It is expected to rise a few times throughout my apprenticeship.

With loads of sporting clubs and musical bands to join at the leasure centre there are a few things to do outside of work.

Over the past few months I have gained alot of valuble skills which I will be able to use throughout my time working at Rolls-Royce.
