  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role as apprentice mechanical fitter, i need to learn how our plant runs and how to maintain it. this involves assisting in plant breakdowns, assisting with preparation for planned stoppages and working on any projects i am assigned. Daily tasks can vary depending on which department i am working in as well as what future work is taking place.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As i already had a HND in mechanical engineering and some fitting skills, the apprenticeship program was adapted to better suit my qualifications and skills. this allows me to better focus on developing the skills i already have as well as gaining new ones. because we also change departments frequently, (from garage to machine shop to working with the fitters to fabrication and welding) this allows us to gain more skills outside of our usual work area.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work at Egger is generally enjoyable, there are some days when things don'[t go to plan or there are other problems, but it is generally enjoyable. Everybody i have worked with is easy to get along with and are all willing to help you learn and develop new skills that you can develop further.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Egger?
  • I feel very valued by the company. The company offers many employee benefits as well as opportunity to do extra curricular activities. these activities can include special projects and rewards as well as an annual apprentice evening out. The company is also good at recognising 5 years of service anniversaries.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When i first started, the organisation of the apprentice program hadn't been fully sorted out. however now the program is very structured, with a schedule of where we are supposed to be in different areas on the factory as well as set times in which we can work on our college work that we need to complete at work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Because we are working in different areas all the time, our training mentors are the workers who do that job every day and therefore are experienced in that field. it means that when ever we have a problem, we can ask and will be provided with help that is both accurate and helps us further our specific knowledge on that task.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If we require additional support in any matter we can talk to a succession of people in the management structure who may be able to help. either the apprentice coordinator, either mechanical supervisors, engineering manager or even the factory manager. however, because most problems can be sorted out by talking to the apprentice coordinator, matters rarely progress any higher.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Being a second year apprentice, my wage is suitable for my living costs. i need to budget to make sure i don't over spend, but i am able to live comfortably by my self. all my equipment is provided by the company so i have to buy very little outside of travel and living expenses.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are some opportunities outside of work, either organised by the company or purely social events, such as Christmas nights out and so on. The company is also a big sponsor of local charity events and charity events organised by workers and staff. As previously mentioned i have been out on a special project day out as well as apprentice nights out.

  • 9. Would you recommend Egger to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Egger is a good place to learn, even if you don't intend on staying, because of the amount of different processes and procedures carried out it allows a very solid learning platform.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Egger?
  • Having experienced the recruitment process, the selection process does highlight alot of the types of work involved in day to day life.
