  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Design Engineering Technician Apprentice allows me to work on new and developing products that are at the forefront of technology. This includes designing and testing products, working as part of a team and communicating with lots of different people.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Currently working towards my HND in Engineering Systems while learning how to work as part of an IPT (integrated project team) towards a common goal.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my apprenticeship as I am working on exciting projects while learning at the same time. Colleagues are also very helpful and will happily take time out their day to ensure you understand what you are doing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • Supervisors and apprentice managers give feedback regularly to allow you to know how you are progressing and things you can improve on. Activities inside the business and also external activities such as STEM work or charity work is also recognised on the company intranet.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Prior to starting working all apprentices are given a two week induction to ensure that they understand what sort of jobs they will be dealing with and to also understand the company rules and policies. The apprenticeship management team are available for any support needs or to help overcome any problems you may have. Assessor meetings are held regularly to ensure your SVQ work is progressing.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • SVQ work is supported by company employees who are trained assessors. This means that they are available to go and see very quickly to run something by them. College also have regular meetings with the apprentice management team so any additional support can be agreed and put into place.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Any support regarding jobs and can be gained from your supervisor as you are working with them daily. Any problems regarding training needs such as SVQ work and college is supported by the apprentice management team. Occupational Health are available for any support regarding health and wellbeing.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I live relatively local to the work site so travel costs are minimal and living costs are easily covered.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • STEM events such as careers fairs are regularly attended at local schools etc. money is raised for charity through different activities such as climbing Ben Nevis, apprentice vs graduate football games and through running marathons as a team etc.

  • Yes

  • You get to work with cutting edge technology while learning and earing a wage.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • Be confident in yourself but not arrogant. Speak to the people conducting the assessment centres and interviews as they are employees so you understand what the job entails etc.
