  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Mechanical maintenance of chemical manufacture plants. Breaking into pipework and performing proactive and remedial work. This can vary on a day to day basis. We aim to purely perform pro active maintenance which allows us to plan for all failure but due to the age of the site we can often find ourselves performing remedial work. this can be changing pipework

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program very much, the people that I am learning from are heavily experienced in the field and many have worked at this company since their own apprenticeships which many started 30 years ago. As a result they have a very good understanding of this equipment and also how to teach apprentices the skills required for the jobs that we will be undertaking.

  • At Syngenta I feel very valued, we have a whole floor of a building which provides access to computers at all times along with meeting rooms to allow for NVQ meetings. They put a lot of time and effort into making the apprenticeship scheme the best by also providing enrichment activites such as team work exercises which we complete on a week away on an outward bound course.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program itself is very well structured, we know when and where we need to be at what points in our apprenticeships, this is through good communication between ourselves and managers on our 8 weekly review meetings. This is time for the manager to give us feedback and also for us to raise concerns discuss on-going projects that we can get involved in and much more.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training provider provide the correct training which is required for the course and allow us to complete the course in a timely fashion. This is due to the college’s vast facilities that enable us to get physical understandings of our project. A key aspect of Kirklees College is the vast variety of different machine tools. These vary from lathes to 5 axis machine centres. The exposure to this machinery allows for a better understanding of the course and a more interesting experience.
