  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Transmissions Design Engineer Costing analysis - Excel spreadsheets and liaison with suppliers/ manufacturing Management and communication of projects with aircraft design lead and Manager Learning principles applicable to transmissions by talking to other designers and analysts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Communication skills have improved greatly. General knowledge of transmissions systems and properties of materials are improving, but may require further training. Skills in design and CAD (CATIA) are steadily improving, CATIA basic course completed but definitely require further training for permanent job role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Generally enjoy my role in Design, the team is very friendly and willing to teach me everything they know. Company has a few issues with systems and permissions that cause frustrations to apprentices when moving placements.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • Managers seem to value my work, and I have been allowed the responsibility of managing a few projects that have helped me greatly in personal development.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation is in some cases lackluster when it comes to placement movement, some placements are less accommodating to apprentices (in terms of permissions and the work you will be carrying out). Generally the training is quite good, although because you are not specialising into a role it cannot be personalised. A Mentor system would be greatly appreciated as it helps to give more continuity when seeking technical knowledge.

  • Support is adequate, although there are sometimes issues with the college data system, and with contacting the lecturers

  • Good support provided, as mentioned above, I believe a mentor would be valuable for new apprentices.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I can live relatively comfortably on my current salary.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yeovil is quite limited when it comes to leisure activities, and its location. The apprentice and student association holds regular social and community events for charity. When not working I am currently busy with Homework and Assignments, so there is not too much time for social or leisure activities

  • 9. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company gives you some great opportunities and gives you the chance to work independently at the beginning of your career. There are lots of different roles to suit different people, be it more physical activities or highly technical.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • English and Maths skills are essential - there are tests in the application process. In the interview your skills in teamwork and critical thinking are the most useful aspects, a desire and enthusiasm to learn is also very valuable. In some cases, the work placement you are in may not be to your taste, but it is valuable to stick through it, and you may end up enjoying the work.
