  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently a delegated underwriting technician in the Hiscox London market dealing with our 'coverholders'. I work on a variety of tasks which involved dealing with audits and due diligence. I interact with many underwriters, brokers and Lloyds itself on a daily basis with any queries or compliance related issues with our coverholders. It's a really interesting job as there is always lots to do and I have realised that you pick up a lot of responsibility very quickly in this role.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying toward my CII certificate in insurance as part of the apprenticeship scheme. In addition to this I have gone on many training courses, particularly focused on excel to increase my excel skills. My manager has also helped me with Microsoft office as a whole to improve my IT skills for the future.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The daily job is very interesting and I enjoy what I do. My team are very friendly and supportive and even has an apprentice from last year in it which is handy as I have him to talk to should I need anything. I really use to hate my old job whilst I was at school, but now I genuinely feel happy on the train going into work as I enjoy both my job and the environment I work in.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Hiscox?
  • In my immediate team I feel incredibly valued by both my manager and the rest of the team as they are very inclusive and rely on me for pretty important work which goes to senior members of Hiscox! Overall however, you do sometimes feel a left out. My team (Delegated Authority) is part of operations when we're needed but not so much socially. The other two London Market apprentices are in a separate team and sometimes get invited to social events. I do not as my team is seen as separate for some reason? I wasn't even invited to the operations xmas meal which when you are a new apprentice trying to find new friends and get involved is quite poor.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programmes is very well structured. We had a great induction week containing many activities and events. Our apprenticeship provider is outstanding and really cares for our development and progress by helping us with our exams and the apprenticeship itself. My only criticism is that last years apprentices were given a mentor, however as of yet I have not been given one.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Our current training provider is brilliant. We see them once a month and they talk us through the programme and tell us about our roles in great depth. They are also very reliable and are always on hand to help with our studying. I enjoy it when I see my provider as he is also very friendly.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is very supportive and helps with any issues I may have and also in general is keen to help me in any way possible. HR were very supportive of an issue that popped up last year and were quick to resolve the problem. They care about my wellbeing and development which is great as it encourages me to do more for the company in return.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It's a standard wage. By the time you pay for the train and tax though it does start to creep down, but it's enough to have fun with.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always events going on in Hiscox overall. There are drinks, parties, quiz nights, five a side tournaments. You name it we do it and if we don't, as long as you organise it, it will more than likely happen.

  • 9. Would you recommend Hiscox to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think Hiscox is very true to itself. They do things differently and you really sense that in the building. It's a very friendly environment and I feel like I can really progress in my career here.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hiscox?
  • Be yourself, keep a cool head and make sure you know your stuff, both on Hiscox and insurance in general.
