  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Role currently is to provide assistance to the Design/Engineering and also IT department meeting their business goals. No day is ever the same for me as I am always doing something different on a daily basis. Examples of my tasks include creating 3D models of projects of multiple disciplines and also assisting with the IT aspects of work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes! One of the best things about Costain is their attitude to allowing training and development. I have been here almost 3 years now and they have fully supported me in gaining industry leading qualifications that will help me to get where I want to in terms of my career future career paths. As my role within the business is very much reliant on having the skills to use modelling software, they always give me the opportunities to undertake course to help with this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do really enjoy working for Costain for so many reasons. Personally, I find that the type of work that they work on is really interesting be a part of and you work with people who know what they are talking about, which is key if you are wanting to learn a lot. I have been involved with many teams since I have joined Costain, and all of them have been a amazing to work with.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Costain?
  • I do feel valued as I feel that Costain are investing in me all of the time. They are allowing me go on training course; help me improve my academic qualifications and make sure I am aiming for the correct career path that suits me. Appreciation and respect is shown amongst team members throughout the business. I was recognised for my involvement within Costain externally by being nominated for apprentice of the year for the Chamber of Commerce in 2016.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say that the programme is fairly well structured. I think in order for you to get the absolute best out of the programme, you also require to take extra responsibility for it. You will have to make the extra effort to make sure that you are on track. Costain are excellent at supporting you need and making sure you achieve your goals that you set out. Whether that is working away or studying a part time qualification.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a lot of feedback from the training provider in line with the qualification. They have regular meetings to ensure that you remain on track to meet the requirements of both the training provider and the employer. They have a serious attitude to making sure that you are successful in your position

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support from the employer is also very good whatever the problem. They will always try to find the best solution that will truly make a difference as they want what's best for you. The HR teams are also very helpful to provide details regarding your position and entitlements. There are so many leaders within the business that you receive such great support from experienced individuals.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I think, given my current position and time that I have been here at Costain, I would say it is reasonable and competitive to others in the market. Costain are more than willing to provide extra funding under certain circumstance such as travel and living costs which can be seen as determination to take on people of the younger generation.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I personally think that there could be more social clubs within the business. They do however have a lot of charitable events that help charities all over the country. They have regular business events where you can meet up with colleagues from all over the UK and get updated on how the business is performing

  • 9. Would you recommend Costain to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because I think from what I have experienced, they are a very good company to work for as they look after you and provide support for you to be able to develop as a person and an employee. I think also that Costain are often involved in major infrastructure projects which is an immediate attraction for anyone who is slightly interested in construction.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • Watch out for vacancies on Costain's recruitment pages as see of you can identify any positions that seem appealing to you. If you see any you like the look of, do apply for them. And if it turns out its not for you, knowing Costain they will find a space that is ideal for you in the business.
