Actuarial Apprentice Review

I am an actuarial apprentice with Aon. When I first joined the role my daily tasks involved individual calculations mainly however now I am involved in the organisation of valuations and funding updates too.

Ove rmy apprenticeship so far I have passed CAA exams module 0 and 1. I have also attended lots of internal sessions such as advising trustees and operational effectiveness. My on the job training however has been most useful in understanding an actuaries role and how to fulfil this.

I am always busy at work which is very good and am surrounded by a very friendly and social team. It can be very helpful to have a team who are willing to go out when not in work hours as you feel closer to them in the office.

Both my manager and many of my collegues have made it clear that I am appreciated with my role as well as my personality within the office. Aon also have initiatives such as Aon stars and reward evenings to show how well you have come on in the role.

The role does not have a clear end date as it ends when all goals have been completed. The study structure and catch up calls/meetings however is very clear in structe. It can be difficult to plan around the apprenticeship ending.

BPP were very helpful in the study portion of my apprenticeship. There were online tutorials as well as coaches to call or email if you had specific questions. They have also been helpful throughout the logbook however I prefer a long to-do list whereas the skills coaches seem to prefer to do one project at a time.

Aon offer 8 study days per exam in order to attend tutorials and study. All members of the team are also very willing to help with either exam, study or more general questions.

The starting wage is a lot higher than the national minimum for an apprentice which is very useful. I do however have to travel for work over a long distance so once my apprenticeship had finished, a large increase to the Grad wage would have been appreciated.

The company are very keen for you to grow your network. This means there are always events and activities lined up to meet people from across the business in any lines you may be interested in. We also have Empoyer Communities days where we are able to volunteer for the day in a local charity.

The company have your best interests at heart and are always willing to find solutions to any issues may have. For example, due to my commute I am now working from home 2 days per week.

Although the application process can seem daunting with the application form, video interview and more formal interview, Aon are very supportive and do not want perfection - they want people who are real.
