Rail technician engineer Review

I go to York college on a full time basis for my first year. In my college holidays I go to work. I work in Leeds at Neville Hill at the train depot. I contribute to the overall maintainable of trains. It is similar to a car going in for an MOT / service

I learn new skills everyday both at college and work. My engineering knowledge has really been enhanced Plus I am constantly developing existing skills such as team work, communication and maths / science knowledge.

I really enjoy the programme I am studying. On a Monday I do a long day at college. This is a theory day where I learn loads with apprentices coming in on day release. The rest of the week at college is to hone my practical engineering skills with the other 1st year apprentices plus college based students.

I feel very valued. I have regular reviews. I go into work every college holiday where I feel part of a team. My line and the top manager have both helped me to learn and develop plus I have their phone numbers / e mail addresses if I ever feel I need to contact them for help and support

It feels very well organised and structured with a full academic day on a Monday. Practical engineering elements the rest of the week with time to complete assignments We also have tutorials and pastoral support When I attend work the health and safety of employees is a Priority therefore all activity around the maintenance is closely monitored and well structured

My training provider is York College I feel I am listened to and helped to complete both academic and practical activities. During tutorial time we learn about safeguarding and health and safety etc so I feel the tutorial teacher takes our safety and well being seriously

As I have mentioned previously my employer is very supportive I am also given a mentor at work who helps to guide me through the tasks I am given. The other employees are very welcoming and happy to show me anything I am unsure of. Plus the management have been very supportive. Even helping to fix my work laptop after it stopped connecting to the Siemens network

I am very happy with my salary. Siemens are a generous company to work for in terms of pay. Pensions / shares / healthcare etc Since starting an apprenticeship I have been able to learn to drive and put money towards a car. I can afford to buy my lunches and join a gym on the salary I earn.

So far I have been mainly based at Uork College so opportunities outside of work have not been offered to me. However when I first started with Siemens I spent a few days at NTAR in Northampton to do my ‘on boarding’ I will be visiting NTAR again in may 2018

Because of all the positive things I have said above plus they are a big company who have many different areas of work. They are forward thinking and always strive to be on top of their game.
