  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, I am liable to process invoices using an internal system (COINS). This involves interaction with suppliers and others in the office in terms of chasing tickets and enquiring about the goods/ machinery in question. I also process labour allocations which also involves interaction with subcontractors. I also maintain the payment sheet which is used when paying subcontractors. At present I am also compiling waste information which has been done on a daily basis for around a month now.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my self confidence although I would like to develop this further. I think my decision making ability has also improved a considerable amount whereby I am able to consider options, make and then implement a decision. I would however like to improve my confidence in defending decisions I make. Furthermore, I feel my communication skills have improved. I have also gained a new qualification in terms of being CSCS certified. Also, I feel the apprenticeship has helped me develop a professional dialogue that I didn't have prior to starting the apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the fact that I work on the Commercial team on huge, iconic build worth in excess of £700m; the experience this will provide me with will no doubt prove invaluable not only for my professional career but also for personal development. Furthermore, I enjoy the satisfaction of contributing to this team; getting tasks finished effectively and to a high standard. I do at times find it somewhat challenging being part of a large team, especially for my first project. The language used can sometimes be quite difficult to understand and therefore integration can prove difficult.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by John Sisk & Sons?
  • When considering my role, I do feel valued. Those around me on the commercial team always seek to involve me on tasks where possible/ applicable and I am always invited to social events. I am always able to ask someone for advice whether it be my line manager or one of the various people involved with the apprentices.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Sisk themselves do not have much say in the structure of my programme apart from the allowance of one day per week allocated to studying which is definitely necessary. In terms of the structure from the point of view of University, in my opinion it could be improved. The time in between assignments can be quite short (around a month). Other thatn that the overall structure of study combined with work is good.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My tutor is always available to answer any concerns I may have. Also, there are forums available on the VLE to answer any concerns I may have regarding the course work itself. The responses in these forums are very consistent. Extra webinars are also appreciated.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager tries to provide tasks that complement my studies which is a help as it allows real life, practical application to the theories I am studing. Whenever i require extra study time, I am always provided it i.e. in the lead up to an exam or after time off in order to catch up. Overall, Sisk do positively contribute towards the course I am undertaking.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • All expenses are paid which is a massive postitve due to annual train costs. The salary enables me to travel everyday and pay rent without issues which is invaluable to someone just beginning a full time job to not have any extra stress. Overall this is more than adequate for my needs at this point in time.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There have been multiple social events since I have joined as well as a strategy workshop and new starters day in Birmingham. I feel all of this has helped with integration and familiarisation in to the company.
