  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Project management apprentice. Currently doing project control for CAM 408. Daily we carry out tasks such as holding meetings with PM's to understand over/under spends, graph creation from data we receive, checking bookings to contracts have been made properly, checking expense claims etc. I'm responsible for ensuring the 200+ people are carrying out their tasks properly to make resourcing as simple as possible for the DCPCM.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think the work is perfect as I'm always kept busy! Within the team there's a perfect dynamic between my line manager, her manager and the other 3 of us (Me, a second year apprentice and a sub con). The company culture is brilliant as it aims to get the best out of people whilst ensuring people don't become stressed or suffer from work related illness. The scheme so far has surpassed my initial expectation and I'm looking forward to a hopefully long career within the company as its amazing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel very valued, my line manager and my colleagues place great faith in me, especially with pivotal tasks that if done wrong can cause many issues. Internally I have been recognised well, shown respect and congratulated for my hard work on the creation of a universal spreadsheet for my year to monitor our off the job training. I'm not as involved with individual projects as I'm more in a more broad role where we more look after people and the amount they spend on projects against its budget we've been assigned.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Its structured really well and this was made clear to us from day one. Thee induction was conducted well and covered all bases from conduct to mental health awareness. We hold regular reviews with the scheme leader and our new skills coach who has been hired to help us identify where we are meeting our competencies and where we are falling short.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support is amazing, the company has set up a network where you can find and select mentors which you can hold meetings with whenever you want to talk about how you can further yourself. any problems we are guided through well by Sharon, Bernard, our line manager and anyone else (Such as the ethics hotline etc.). No one holds any grudges about supporting others, its a positive culture that's been created to ensure people can speak out and seek help when they need it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is ace. It goes above and beyond covering living costs, any travel costs can be claimed back via expenses, daily costs are well met, social costs are well met and the location of the north west sites is perfect.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of our roles we have plenty of opportunities. I've supported two open evenings so far, one as a speaker and one behind a market stall answering questions. I'm due to help out at an assessment day for new apprentices in April. I've participated in 5 A-side at Warton multiple times and play for the apprentice football team.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company looks after all employees well, offers a range of roles and has endless possibilities of development.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Just be yourself and be truthful, they will always find out if you lie through questioning. In an interview you need to remain clam and composed whilst trying to cover as many bases as possible in each answer. During the group tasks people must get involved but not be too forceful or come across as bossy.
