  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • CSS Specialist (Controls Engineer). I haven't had much workplace experience since the first year of the program is mainly in college. Tasks when in the workplace from what I have seen involve maintaining the operation of the site and responding to reports from other REM engineers around the site.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt some practical skills and learnt about the operation of an Amazon site. There is much more technical knowledge to be had throughout the process when at university and on site for longer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I personally don't find college particularly enjoyable since it has been quite disorganised so far throughout the year. The technical knowledge such as maths and electronics is a bit more enjoyable for me, especially when it's something new that I haven't learnt before.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Amazon?
  • It's hard to feel valued in such a massive organisation but I think Amazon do it really well. Our apprentice manager is very helpful and he always listens to any complaints or issues that we have.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I haven't experienced enough of the structure of the programme to comment, but what I have experienced so far in college has not been good at all. This is down to the college rather than the employer but it is still disappointing. The structure of the full apprenticeship looks good in terms of getting a degree after only 4 years.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Some tutors in the training provider are very supportive and a few are not. Overall the staff are definitely supportive but this is sometimes overshadowed by the lack of organisation

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I haven't had much contact with the company other than through our apprenticeship manager who is very supportive.

    8/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is very generous compared to other apprenticeships I looked at, and covering travel costs, rent and adding some extra money for food makes it a brilliant package.

    10/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I haven't had enough experience in the workplace to know about opportunities out of work.

    7/10

  • 9. Would you recommend Amazon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The salary is generous and it is one of the fastest degree apprenticeships that I found when I was researching. I'm not finding it particularly enjoyable at the moment due to the organisation of the training provider, but it's not fair to comment on this for the whole program since the majority of it will be in the workplace.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon?
  • It was no different to other interviews I did, as long as you look enthusiastic it's all fine.
