  • I work as a IM&T Apprentice within BAE Systems Maritime, at the Barrow-In-Furness site. I do a range of placements over my apprenticeship where I can see how the function supports the production of nuclear submarines

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my IT skills on Excel and been able to gain new skills with Microsoft Project.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is a good, well-paid opportunity which allows me to save for a brighter future.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • BAE put a lot of focus on apprentices and try to give them a positive experience, however it is sometimes hard in such a large business to see how you support the job in which BAE do.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured, there is a clear progression timeline which leads to an exit role in the future.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Not much, the support from Manchester Metropolitan university is poor and the course isn't well structured.

  • You receive a lot of support from the employer from a progression and academic standpoint.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I receive a good salary capable of meeting all my costs comfortably.

  • We participate in what is called stretch assignments, where we work within a larger community to achieve something not directly related to work.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • No


  • 9b. Why?
  • Work is sometimes very slow and it requires a lot of patience to work there.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Be confident and show your personality, they would rather hire someone they believe has the personality to develop than someone who may have a slightly more impressive academic record.
