  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Apprentice Engineer on a higher apprenticeship scheme. My daily tasks range depending on the need of the day. I have worked on a number of different projects and jobs which require different things of each day. I have worked on mechanical design, electronic design, electrical design, builds of all types, software design and the list continues. With this scheme, the possibilities are enormous.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have worked my way through a PEO level two, a HNC and am most of the way through a HND and NVQ. Next year, I will start the degree. I have learned many new skills and have improved the skills I already had. I have become competent at testing, designing, soldering, building and have even improved my communication skills in the workplace. This is a good place to learn.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed my time here but of course every role has ups and downs. The work is interesting, and the team is friendly and will try to help where they can. The culture here is nice and most will take time out of their day to assist you where you need it or even if you simply need a chat.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Teledyne/E2V?
  • The teams here are readily trying to get more and more apprentices involved in the more complicated tasks, not just supplying us with errands. They know that we are the next engineers and technicians coming through. Recognition as with expectations depends on the person but overall, I feel that good work is recognised.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction is well suited to the needs of new people and covers the necessary skills needed in order to start working. The training is completed to help with the work and the support systems are good as everyone is willing to help where they can. Overall, the apprenticeship itself is well done, the teams could do with further focus.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The current training provider for my year is fairly average as support is often needed for the work. It takes some time to arrange this support so overall, no more can be expected. The qualifications are valued and will allow progression. The tutors do try to help and most are confident in their teachings.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The apprentice manager is available for most of the time and is happy to talk about any problems. The HR team is also available and can be approached. There is also a mentor system already in place and those selected are happy to help. The people are also more than happy to help and will take their time to do so.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I live fairly close by and travel mostly by bike. The salary is a good starting rate and does increase as you progress through the apprenticeship. The site is located near to the town centre and close to the train station and bus station so is accessible to most. The site also has a large car park for those who drive.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company hosts a number of activities for employees and families. We also visit schools to run activities in order to inspire the next generation, and attend careers events to answer any questions they have. We also have a yearly open evening to showcase our talents and to get our name and our scheme out to the public.

  • 9. Would you recommend Teledyne/E2V to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities afforded to those here are good and the experience gained here is often invaluable. The training is good and the higher scheme even goes up to the degree level. Apprentices have (once the scheme has finished) even gone through education higher to that of a degree.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Teledyne/E2V?
  • Apprenticeships are always worth looking into and applying for. Teledyne e2v has a video application, an assessment day, and if you succeed, induction periods to welcome you into the company. They like you to be interested and have some knowledge of what the company does. If you can find something special about yourself, show it off. Good luck.
