  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Insurance Practitioner On a day to day basis this means that I support the Client Service Advisors carry out their day to day tasks, ensuring deadlines are met. The client servie team prepare various correspondence for our clients, renewals, as well as answering any technical / day to day questios they have. The workload is quite varied as there are a number of different clients assigned to you to service, so each day can be slightly different, although all within the same strucutre. I have been fortunate enough to be able to visit clients with the client managers and this has enabled me to add context to the work I am doing on a daily basis, by actually meeting the clients and getting a feel for what they do, it helps me to understand their risks and insurance programme much better. As i have mentioned, I work with different people, not just limited to my own team. This helps me to vary my workload and observe how different people work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot in the short space of time that I have been here. The most obvious is learning the organisational behaviours and learning how to conduct myself in such a large business, coming straight from A-Levels this was important. I have developed my technical knowledge through extensive training also. I am working towards my CII qualification, which I am enjoying, and aim to progress beyond completion of this. Internally, Aon provide frequent refresher training which is fantastic and really useful in my development. I am now more confident in my job, especially speaking with clients and other people external to the business. My overall business skill set has significantly improved.

  • My manager values me as part of the team assiting other members of the team. I feel as if I have settled in well and make a positive contribution which has been recognised. Internally, i also feel valued and part of the team. Members of Aon who are not in my team involve me in things they are doing that they think will be beneficial for me, showing how they value my development. • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My induction programme was well structured, allowing me to meet new people, obtain technical and behavioural information that helped me in the office. Ongoing training is very useful and benefits me in developing my technical insurance knowledge, allowing me to do my job much more effectively. I have been provided with substantial support both internally and externally to allow me to develop both as a person and in terms of my technical knowledge. Task delegation is fairly informal but this works best because there is no way of predicting a lot of the work that comes in. Some of the work I do follows the renwal process and therefore is structured. Overall, the programme has been structured well.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have monthly meetings with my talent coach. Initially this is face to face, however it becomes more remote. She is very helpful and keen for me to develop. I can email her whenever I need help/assistance and she is very pro-active at resolving issues. Overall, she is very helpful in my development.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have recieved support from my manager to enable me to learn. My manager is very pro-active in ensuring that I have enerything I need to develop, including enough time to study. I have access to materials in the office which will help me. One example of this is blank policies which I can read to understand contents of a policy for example. But i can access all of my learning materials at work also. If I have any issues, I can easily raise them with my manager and she is very pro-active and supportive to ensure that I have everything I need.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • At present, my Salary is sufficient for my limited expenses, however I intend to move up the pay scale sooner rather than later to ensure that I can meet expenses as they inevitably increase. The one expense which is difficult is the train fare, which has increased sice I have started, but I am aware of the support that Aon provides for this.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work, I have heard of some activities that I can get involved in. For example, I have started to get involved in one of Insurance's leading bodies. My involvement in this will be multi-beneficial. Other activities such as Empower Results day provide help in the community and is something I want to gwt involved with in the future.

  • 9. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Aon is a fantastic organisation and is somewhere where you can feel valued as part of a team, and really develop / start your career in insurance. I would certinly consider Aon as a fantastic start to your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • My main tip for applicant is to be yourself. Aon invest in people and therefore want to know what you are like as a person. Aon is hugely diverse, amd therefore do not look for specific 'types' of people, rather look for genuine people who can make a difference. This is particularly the case for the assessment day but applies throughout the process. Everything I wanted to know I was told, but I would ensure that you find out about the specific career progression path Aon want you to take to ensure you have clear goals and subsequently a clear way of achieving them. That will help you develop.
