  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working within Project Controls we are responsible for monitoring and controlling the projects. Undertaking six placements throughout the two years allows me to gain an understanding of each team within the department. Day-to-day I will be interacting with the project team and could be producing items such as the estimate, schedule or risk register

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have developed personal skills such as presenting, confidence and communicating. In addition to gaining knowledge around the placements and project management principles. Working towards the Level 4 Diploma in Project Management has allowed me to learn the principles and theories behind it and then implement them within the job. In addition we attended addition training courses to broaden are knowledge of the company, for example 'how the business makes money'.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is exactly what I was looking for from an apprenticeship. I have settled into the teams really well and been given the support I require. The teams challenge me with work, which is good as this helps me develop and grow. I am treated like any other member of staff which makes me feel welcome. I sense there will be great opportunities in the future, which has been made possible from the strong foundation the scheme has created for me.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • Extremely valued. I have undertaken many additional activities outside my day-to-day responsibilities. These are recognized by the team and often rewarded with appreciates. We have reviews every 4 months which is a good chance to advertise the work I have done. Receiving positive feedback really makes the hard work worth while. The team have trusted me with many events such as presenting at the Project Controls Expo.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a fantastic programme in place. There was an initial welcome day prior to starting the programme, which allowed me to meet members of the team and gain an better understanding of what I will be doing. In addition there is an induction period for the first 6 weeks which allowed me to undertake many development courses. This included a week outward bound course which allowed me to interact with other Apprentices and develop my personal skills such as leadership and communication. The two year programme had been created and identified where my placements would be and when, which was great to know. There is a variety of people there to support me through the apprenticeship, in addition to the team and managers who were also happy to support me.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Support it always available. There are roles such as Development manager and new talent specialist. They are there to provide support for the programme and training. Whenever I have raised an issue they have been quick to act on this. They provide ongoing feedback and guidance when tackling any issues I have raised. Having catch ups has allowed to provide constant feedback and raise any minor concerns I may have.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Being assigned a mentor has allowed me to focus my development and raise any on job issues I have. My mentor has been able to guide me and point me in the right direction. My Placement Managers have been really supportive and support both my on job and off job work. If I need any additional time to work on my off job work, they have been happy to support this. Team Managers have been accepting of me joining the team and provided me additional work and support. I have worked with HR and built up good relationships, if required I know they would provide support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is amazing. It allows me to save and plan for my future whilst still being able to afford leisure activities and general living. Any travel that exceeds my daily commute is claimable through expenses, whether this be mileage or train travel. I am able to afford daily costs such a food at the office which is a reasonable price. Anytime I am staying away and working away from home food can be expensed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many additional opportunities. I have participated in many career fairs at schools and venues. I have had the chance to present to colleges about the fantastic apprenticeship opportunities available. I was put forward to assist at the Project Controls Expo stall and present to around 150 Project Controls experts and novices. In addition there has been many team social evenings where we have gone for food or an activity. There are many sports team which are also available.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company and programme is fantastic. The support provided and the way employees are treated really defines National Grid as a company. there are many opportunities here which allows you to grow and develop. The benefits package available also is fantastic and provides all employees with a great package. There is a fantastic share scheme available which is a great investment opportunity.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Take the time to consider which scheme is most suitable for you. Take time with the application and do not rush the questions. Ensure you have a strong CV, to support your application. Do sufficient preparation prior to the telephone interview. At the assessment centre ensure to get involved and show willingness. Ensue to prepare for the interview and consider what you say before answering any questions. Try to stay as relaxed as possible.
