  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an auto electrician at Caterpillar in Peterlee. Caterpillar is a global company, the facility in Peterlee is the only CAT facility to produce articulated trucks. On a daily basis my jobs range from fault finding, data analyzing, fitting different components, flashing ECM's, and so on. As a caterpillar apprentice we are placed with mentors and support to help us over the 4 years. I work with 3 mentors and follow them closely. My overall job is to fix the trucks that caterpillar produce that may have any electrical faults. I dont follow a set or standard work i have different job everyday and therefore it keeps me busy and interested everyday.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since i began 2 years ago i have obtained a Level 3 in Engineering and have developed a number of practical skills such as fault finding, using different tools and equipment. My problem solving and approaching a job has also improved and ive developed it much further its a life skill to apply to any situation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job and my team around me. I feel really supported in my role. I enjoy having a new challenge everyday so i never feel bored or feel dis interested. The hours i work are fair and reasonable and the course i m on at college is fun and rewarding. Im enjoying my time here and hope to stay here in this role for some time.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Caterpillar?
  • I feel valued and appreciated by caterpillar. As a women in a male dominated industry i feel Ctaerpillar makes you feel equal and you feel like you belong and are wanted by the company. The amount of time and money spent into ur development makes me feel important and needed.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation is very good and it is well structured where the company provides a rotational plan so i am getting exposed to all of the nessesry areas to develop. this is written out and on a rota that structurally followed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I enjoy college and believe the courses are very good. I do believe some of the courses dont offer everything we need but i think if Caterpillar sat down with the college and talked through our roles they could be more bespoke and more suited to each individuals job.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My mentor supports me in my everyday roles and my job and we have developed a good working relationship. My manager helps with my illness' and holidays, etc. this covers my HR support. At Caterpillar we have an identified apprentice manger that is very involved and offers all round support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My wage and my benefits are very good. I get paid over double minimum wage and my wage goes up every year im here as the older i get the more responsibilities and Caterpillar understand this and therefore increases the wage. The pension and shares scheme are also very good programmers that are good for saving investing money and more.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There is a lot of additional opportunities outside of work such as careers fairs, STEM activities, and other activities. The managers and business really support this and help us get involved. This helps us develop other skills for life.

  • 9. Would you recommend Caterpillar to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a really good company to work for, the wages are really good and benefits. Caterpillar develop people for who they are and themselves rather then just being another worker.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Caterpillar?
  • Ak questions, be confident, show a good interest. Qualifications aren't everything Caterpillar are more interest in the person then what skills they have. Skills can always be taught attitude cant be.
