  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a digital technician apprentice so I work with television editors and productions, I have helped and assisted with roles of helping digital issues with the technicians and I have also completed independent work on my own for ingesting media to go into the final edit within the BBC. My every day work load is working with productions making requests to my department asking for assistance with media management and assistance with editing projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt so much from the apprenticeship in my position, learning skills about being a digital technician when I had zero experience has made me realise what I want to do as a career. I have shadowed so many job roles during the offline edit, online edit and even how the department runs with Front of House and the scheduling team. I have had training courses on becoming a fire warden and now have a certificate in this. I have learnt the basic skills and even advanced skills on becoming an edit assistant, using the software to edit projects and created positive relationships at networking events with editors.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really love every day I work in the BBC digital village - every person I work with are so positive and helpful. I particularly enjoyed my induction week too, the BBC tried to make the boring parts of starting a new job as exciting as possible with a tour of a different buildings and how the BBC works as a whole in all the separate departments like news, radio and television. I enjoy my day to day work as there is always new information to absorb, the management offer new learning classes for every colleague in the office to come along so everyone feels like they're being productive and growing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel valued as an apprentice, I have been offered many different opportunities to network with separate departments. I have also been asked to review the apprenticeship many times so I feel my opinion is valid for the present and future apprentices. I also feel like im part of my team within my apprenticeship, the people I work with are so friendly and helpful.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel it is well structured in a way, however I have been promised many experiences that have not been fulfilled. Because I am office based I don't get to see much of how productions go on shoots and film the footage that I deal with, I never get to see that side of the process. The apprentices have been promised different opportunities and they seem to get forgotten about quite often, I don't see my talent manager as much as I'd hope to see.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The manager in charge of my progress is very supportive, she will email often and arrange meetings. When arranging a meeting isn't as easy as it should be, she will always email to plan a phone call to catch up on my progress and how I am feeling. As stated before, I feel sometimes the talent manager and training provider offer opportunities to then have them forgotten about.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employment manager is really supportive - they are in the same office as me so whenever I have any issues I'll go and seek her advice and most of the time she is available to come and show me how to overcome the problem and explain WHY. This is helpful as it can occur that I could have reoccurring problems and she is always understanding and helpful to explain the issue. Sometimes I feel it goes a long time that me and my manager don't catch up on how I'm feeling in my current department, I think we have a meeting once every three months roughly, which I would prefer more frequently.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The pay packet as an apprenticeship is good compared to others I have looked at, however I feel I work long hours with no extras. Sometimes I am expected to stay later rather than finishing shifts on time and it is expected that I stay as deadlines are due. I travel for an hour every morning and my outcomes of fuel works out to be 15% of my pay while I get the same pay as another apprentice who lives a 5 minute walk away from the building. The building has no parking for me either so I have to pay extra to park near the building, the average costs of parking near the building is £10 for 6 hours or more- my shifts are 8/9 hours long.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many networking events, however I would like to have more outside of work opportunities where there are options to go to other buildings and have a look at what facilities they have. The networking events are usually social events hosted by the BBC on a weeknight so travelling can be difficult for me especially with work the next day.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are very supportive and their educational opportunities are amazing. They want to push every colleague to their fullest and are an understanding employer to each colleagues individual backgrounds and situations.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Its not always necessary to focus on what experience you have, I found that showing my personality was definitely more advantageous than experience. I was told after the interview process that they choose candidates that have the motivation more than knowledge, because knowledge can be taught however motivation cant.
