  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice QS on a day to day basis I look at different costs of the job that I am currently on and begin to evaluate them by putting them in manageable formats. I look at the amount of work that sub-contractors have done each day so that when they come to being paid it is much easier to assess how much they have applied for. I also sort out payments for many of the sub-contractors currently on site. I sometimes go out on site to look at what has been done but also to occasionally help the engineers set out out.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have done training courses that means I can work on any Tideway site, I have also got my Thames Water Passport, this means that I can go onto any Thames Water site, not just sites that are apart of my companies. Tideway is a joint venture I have therefore learnt different systems of working that I may not have otherwise experienced. I have also been able to experience a variety of different sites as there are 7 Tideway sites that Bam are involved with meaning that I have seen a mixture of different sites that have different civil engineering works involved with them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the programme, I like being able to meet new people all the time and my job being different every day. The company support me through whatever I need, whether its help finding a house when i go on site or help during college I know that there is someone to talk to.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAM?
  • We are all treated individually and each one of us feels valued as an individual. When on site we are well looked after, each one of us is assigned a line manager that makes sure we are okay at all times and making us feel like a valuable member of the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The whole programme is well organised we have a calendar for the year that means we know when we will be on site and when we will be at college. The system of having a manager whilst on site means that the system is organised as there is always someone who knows what you should be doing and where you should be if you are unsure.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Tutors are always accessible and available to ask questions whenever needed, they are also willing to help with assignments outside of lesson time. They also consider us, as an example if we are struggling with an assignment but proved we have made an attempt and an effort to complete it they are willing to extend deadlines to take the pressure off.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Throughout our time at college people from the company come and visit us in order to make sure that everything is okay and to ask any questions that we want to ask. We are also able to email or call our line managers anytime we need anything proving constant support from our employer.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Our travel costs are covered by the company and our wages increase when we are on site away from home, they increase more or less on where we are living. Not only that but whilst at college our lunches are paid for.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are different opportunities outside of work including roadshows where you can meet many different people from the company and see what Bam are doing at that point in time and what they have achieved.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an exciting industry to be apart of with Bam Nuttall offering some amazing experiences and a very good apprenticeship scheme to be apart of.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • When applying to be apart of Bam I would say write a good application that makes you stand out from the other people applying, this can mean work experience or National citizen service, something that makes you different. On assessment days be prepared know what the company is about but also the job that you want to go into. By standing out you are more likely to be remembered therefore on assessment days and at interviews ask questions and answer questions to the best of your ability. Finally I would say if you get the job embrace all the opportunities that you are given.
