1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My Job Title is Technician Engineer. My project is building schools. I look after dimension control, quality checks, ensuring we stick to specifications. Checking and recording fire stopping and snags to ensure a successful hand over and client satisfaction.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt multiple skills whilst at LOR. Mainly technical knowledge and skills as I am learning a lot every day from my managers, uni studies and colleagues. I have also learnt new skills such as basic construction skills, team working, socialising etc etc.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme a lot, it is well structured. it is easy to contact the managers and organisers with an queries etc. The opportunity is amazing and the development courses and schemes that are additional to the uni work is really helpful also.

4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?

I feel a valued part of my business. High up management are very easy to talk to and regularly have chats and catch ups to check progress and happiness within the company. I feel respected by my peers and colleagues and everyone knows I don't have as much knowledge and no one minds me asking questions or getting them to show me new things.

5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program is really well structured, it was clearly set out in our induction what would be happening when. We have 1-2 modules a year where we meet up with the rest of my cohort to do workshops and courses such as team building, organisation and workload management. These are great few days as the knowledge shared by and with my other colleagues is invaluable as we are all in the same boat. The structure and organisation is good.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

My tutors at uni are very easy to contact and respond quickly. As my class size is only 6 the support from lecturers is really good.

6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

I can contact a number of the school and college leaver team when every I want, with any issues or questions and they are very quick to respond and implement any actions required. I also have contact with managers at all levels within my specific discipline/ branch of LOR.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

My salary is good and I feel like it supports my current needs. My company also has good expenses policies with all my fuel costs being covered and if the site is over a certain distance away then they will pay for living costs/ rent.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

My company has given me opportunities to promote STEM and become a STEM ambassador. As my project is schools this has lead to opportunities within these schools to run stem days and do talks. My work also has hindered me from taking part in my hobbies and activities that I do in my spare time.

9. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?

9b. Why?

It is a great company, I feel looked after and like I have fallen on my feet. There is great opportunities within LOR and some of the projects are massive household name kinda schemes.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?

The application process is really long and there are a lot of hoops to jump through. but that is because there is only a small number of places and thousands apply. Also get some work experience (doesn't have to be with laings) I think Work experience is an invaluable thing especially with an apprenticeship as it will be your career, you need to make sure you like it. Also Work experience looks great to the employer and will get you a long way.
