  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Human Resources department. The job involves regularly communicating with new recruits to let them know when they are starting and what they need to bring to their induction as well as arranging their HR inductions with managers from other 3M sites around the UK. Other tasks I deal with are settlement agreements and redundancies. I also do work for the benefits department. Last month, I helped organise the 3M UK HR/Legal conference.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have really developed my organisation skills since starting this appprenticeship as I often get a large workload or a variety of tasks to complete so I have to make sure I pioritise the most important ones first and meet all deadlines/due dates. I have also much better now at learning how to deal with confidential information. My telephone skills have also developed as I often have to either make or take a lot of calls.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The variety of tasks I get to do as this makes it a lot more interesting. Everyone in the Human Resources department are very friendly and helpful which does make the job slightly easier and less stressful. They are also quite flexible with hours and are willing to help out if you think your workload is a bit too much and are stuggling to meet deadlines.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?
  • I feel very valued by everyone in the department and I feel as though I get praised often for the work I have put in and as though I am making an impact on the company. I felt this when helping to organise the HR/Legal conference as I was given the freedom of making some of the decisions.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised as 3M have been taking apprentices on for years so they provide plenty of help and people to support me. They often make time to train me in tasks I have never completed before and give me the chance to ask plenty of questions when I'm confused. My manager also makes sure scheledules in plenty of catch-up sessions with me to make sure everything is going ok with work and to make sure I don;t have any issues.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider has an assessor who comes in every couple of months to see what coursework/tests I have completed and to set me work to complete for the next time I see her. She also checks to make sure I am not stuggling to complete work and asks if I am having any problems. I can also contact her regularly by email if I have any questions. However, I do believe that more support could be provided, maybe by a catch up email to see how I am doing before she next somes in to see me o rby asking a few more questions.
