  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is IT Infrastructure Apprentice. This involves, maintaining VPN equipment, troubleshooting, configuring and upgrading and installing. Also admin work is required to read and respond to emails daily, as well as organising meetings and changes that need to take place. I also run technical projects which usually involve ordering and installing equipment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have gained Microsoft qualifications as well as level 3 and 4 systems and networking apprenticeship. Now I attend external training courses in London with my apprenticeship provider QA, and usually have 2 workshops to attend every few months. This involves written coursework and also examinations which I will need to pass in order to gain my Degree. I have learnt a huge number or skills since beginning my apprenticeship, all of which I use daily in my job role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much, and look forward to every day that I work, as I like learning new things. 3M is a great company to work for, and I feel a very valued member of the team with lots of responsibility. The training is also very enjoyable with lots to think about and learn.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by 3M UK?

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction and training when I first started was a bit slow and took quite a bit of time to get started, this was due to paperwork, but could be as expected as everything needed to be correct and in place before starting. The support I receive is great and I cannot fault that, as there is always someone available to help me if required. I get plenty of study time, and organise my own time independently, so my manager allows plenty of time for me to study for any exams and carry out coursework if need be.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Great support. We have an online Canvas which gives us all the information I need to progress with any coursework and exams, which I can work through week by week. Also there is an option for conversations on the online portal to enable me to discuss with the tutor for any questions. My skills coach also comes in the office to discuss my project report with me every 6 weeks to see how I am getting on, and to give me recommendations. I am enjoying it so far, and have all the support I need.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Tons of support from my manager and my team. They are always around to help out and have a great understanding. They have taught me a lot and it is great getting the support and hands on experience. If there are any problems they are easily resolved and sorted, and we have monthly review meetings to discuss all on going work and if I need help or require any other work which I love.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary meets my costs fairly well, understandable there is always a bit of a struggle as it is an apprenticeship. But often my salary changes every year with responsibility changing in the work place, and me taking on more work. But I am able to get to work and live without any issue on my wages, and the location of my workplace is only 15 minutes from my house so petrol is not an issue.

  • Many company events take place outside of work, there is also a gym here which is great. Lots of friends are made at 3M, so we organise many events together and there is always an excuse to go out!
