  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an associate at PwC, my job role involves auditing the financial statements of a variety of clients and providing assurance. This means that often I am working face to face with clients and have the opportunity to meet new people every day - which I really enjoy. Each day is different, depending on which clients you are assigned to. This aspect really appeals to me as we are given the opportunity to explore which sector and type of clients we personally enjoy working on the most.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through this programme I have developed an abundance of new skills. Through doing my University qualifications I have learnt underlining auditing and accounting knowledge, which I have been able to apply whilst on my work placement. The degree and the placements work hand in hand to aid personal development on the programme. Before going on placement we are given tailored training in order to prepare. I personally found this really useful, and it made the transition from University to working at PwC run smoothly.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I could not rate this programme high enough. I am so grateful for the opportunities given through participating in this degree. Not only is the team at the University always willing to go out of their way to help aid your learning and development - the team at PwC have been so welcoming and accommodating. There is a real team spirit at PwC - whether it be reflected through the teamwork whilst working on an audit, or through the social activities they arrange for us outside of work. Overall, the programme really has gone above and beyond my expectations - and I feel very lucky to be a part of such a fantastic degree.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by PwC?
  • From day one at PwC it was made very clear how valued I was. During out first few days we are encouraged to set personal development targets and discuss goals we would like to achieve, with our people managers. My people manager is approachable and easy to talk to - she helped me reflect on my targets and gave constructive advice as to how I could achieve them throughout my placement. Alongside this - after working on each new client I was able to request feedback from my in-charge on the job. I found this feedback extremely helpful, as it allowed me to reflect on what I had done well and areas I could improve on for my next client.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Personally, I think the structure of the Flying start Degree programme has the perfect balance. It incorporates a traditional University experience, alongside work placements to help you start a career in finance. I think one aspect that put me off a number of apprenticeship programmes was the fact I didn't want to miss out on the 'University experience'. But through doing this degree I have been able to enjoy a taste of University life and a taste of working life in a fast paced, corporate environment. The support both at the University and at PwC has been brilliant. On the degree we are treat as adults and with the utmost of respect. I believe the training and studying we complete whilst at University really compliments and prepares us for the work we do on placement.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • At the University we are each given our own personal tutor, who we can reach out to should we have any issues. Although I have not yet needed their assistance, my tutor is friendly and welcoming and I know that I could approach her should I need to discuss any matters. The lectures are also incredibly approachable and are always happy to help with any queries we may have about a lecture. We are always provided with numerous sources of learning materials for revision and studies - which are really beneficial during exam period.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My people Manager at Pwc is very approachable and supportive. Whether it be through setting personal targets or any work related queries, my Manager was able to assist me and offer her support. At PwC we are made aware of the numerous sources of guidance we have access to - whether it be HR, our University team, or our managers. We are also given support should there be anything issues with our accommodation - which is provided for us.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • This programme offers a very competitive salary / package. The Employee benefits are great. One thing that I value the most is that our accommodation is provided for us whilst we are on placement. As many of us go on placement to different locations in the UK - this service is really appreciated, as it takes the stress off looking for somewhere to live! Overall I'm very happy with my salary and other work perks, such as discount at numerous brands.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We always receive weekly emails of events in our base office. I think this is great as it encourages everyone at the company to get involved in social events - whether they are associates or even Directors. There is a social event each month which is great to get involved in - and allowed me to socialise with people who I had not yet spoken to. After working on a client we also have a 'debrief' which is a great opportunity to relax with your audit team after working on a job.

  • 9. Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have not seen any other degree programme which offers such as prestigious package. I think the balance of University life and work life is great - particularly for students who know they want to pursue a career in accounting and finance but don't want to miss out on the University experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • For the interview I would recommend having a general understanding of PwC and the role of an auditor. It's beneficial to research the company you could potentially be working for, not only to aid you in your interview, but to help you grasp an understanding of what the company does, and whether this degree is for you. I would also recommend keeping up to date with events in the news - as this may come up as an interview question! Also, not to worry if students haven't done Maths A-level, you're not at a disadvantage without it! :)
