  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role was that I was a News Automation Analyst and that my role housed a variety of jobs. My primary role was to identify patterns in financial and economic data, update databases alongside meeting clients and publishing results through machine-readable news, delivering to our clients. I interacted with both colleagues and clients on a daily basis strengthening my communication skills and I handed many responsibilities through handling masses of data. It was very enjoyable as well as I was able to spot interesting results and tell others through writing publications.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed the internship very much as I got along with all the other interns and they were very friendly, which positively added to my experience. Although the work was sometimes stressful and hard to get my head around, it was very rewarding especially when you meet with clients to discuss bonds, stocks and sometimes politics. Through applying my knowledge in real life situations has vastly improved my confidence in communicating with a variety of people. Finally, Bloomberg as a whole was very good in that the atmosphere was relaxed and didn't feel like a pressure cooker.

  • In terms of appreciation, I felt very valued by the company. I was greatly involved in the tasks, especially when conducting complex data analysis and presenting it to clients. • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My internship was incredibly organised as each intern was given a timetable outlining what we had to do per week and was always given in advance and also in the induction as well. They also provided training on how to use software and organise information about the types of clients Bloomberg provides to with a lot of them being high end.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Each intern was assigned a personal mentor from Bloomberg and they were incredibly useful more for the specific tasks, checking to see if we are using the software correctly and analysing the data properly. The mentors were also good for reassuring me that making mistakes along the way is normal which reassured me. Through their help it increased my confidence in using Stata for equations and regression analysis and always friendly and always willing to help me.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • On our floor we had a line manager who was always available when our personal mentors were ill or away on important business meetings. They were always available and approachable especially in the first week, when I was adjusting myself into an unfamiliar environment. The line manager would always answer any general queries and offer guidance in how to settle in and always checked our progress on a weekly basis.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary was relatively good and we also have bonuses based upon our performance on the internship, which was very incentivising. I lived near the office, as the location was good for traveling and thankfully my travel expenses were covered by Bloomberg as well. The social costs depended on the types of activities that one chooses to do but restaurants and bars were relatively expensive but still enjoyable. We often had after work drinks every week which was paid for by the managers which was a bonus.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There were a few opportunities outside of work, especially dinners with the senior managers which occurred every two months. The location of the office was very good as it meant that there was loads to in terms of activities like going to restaurants and bars with the other interns which was enjoyable. In addition, Bloomberg did have some local initiatives catering towards employees who have disabilities, improving their experience but there were little local community initiatives. This is because Bloomberg is based in Central London.
