  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am the Studio IT Apprentice for Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. I am responsible for helping my team provide IT support for both WB employees at the studio and the Harry Potter Tour as well as film productions that rent space on site. I help maintain the shared inbox and create tickets for any requests I get via email, phone or walk-in situations and distribute them to the appropriate person if I am unable to do it myself. Some of the things I do include creating guest Wi-Fi, provisioning Wi-Fi in buildings and sound stages, installing handsets in newly rented suites, changing the network on ports around site, dealing with reported faults on hardware for productions and WB Staff and managing small projects given to me by my line manager.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • After my apprenticeship I will have achieved a Level 3 NVQ as well as a functional skills qualification in IT. I have also attended both a beginners and intermediate Excel course and hope to do the advanced excel course in the near future. Working for a big company like Warner Bros. I have learnt to be more organised and improved my prioritisation as these are key for my role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship as it has exposed me to a different side of computer networking and has led me to make some close friendships. I learn something new everyday and feel I am furthering myself as a person as I get closer to my career goal. On a more personnal note, having my apprenticeship away from my home town has encouraged me to drive. This was a long-standing phobia of mine which I have now overcome! I can't put into words how lucky I feel about getting this apprenticeship.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by WarnerMedia?
  • I feel extremely valued by Warner Bros. as I am seen the same way as any other employee. I get to reap the same benefits and opportunities just as any permanent employee is able to and I am treated as an equal across all departments when it comes to discussing professional matters. It feels good to have people call me directly and ask for assistance rather than them go to a member of my team who has been here longer. I get constant recognition from my manager at our monthly catch-ups and get praised when I use my initiative.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It being an IT course, I am not required to travel to the Outsource centre much because the workshops they run wouldn't be relevant to my qualification (this is what my tutor said, not me). I am given every friday to work on my coursework which has allowed me to stay way ahead of my deadlines and I am hoping to finish the course early. I have a 4 weekly meeting with my line manager as well as a 6 weekly meeting with my on-site mentor as well as regualr meetings with my HR rep to make sure everything is running smoothly. I feel it is quite well organised.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The company in charge of my qualifications (Outsource) haven't been as cooperative, they struggled to keep in contact to let me know a workshop was cancelled and the website they use to upload work needs a re-work. My tutor, on the other hand, is extremely helpful and we have regular calls and meetings to review progress and discuss work I am having trouble with.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From a Warner Bros. point of view, the scheme has been flawless; I get ongoing support from my line manager and HR representative with regular meetings to discuss anything I see relevant and to make sure I'm getting on okay. I feel I can approach these indivduals if I have any issues which makes the whole process smoother.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I feel I get a fair pay for an Apprentice, however, I do not have my own accomodation so wouldn't know how big monthly bills would have an impact. I get enough to pay for my car and buy everyday essentials with enough left over to put a nice amount in my savings without leaving me too low.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company are currently doing a 'virgin pulse' scheme where they back your fitness; you can collect points by keeping fit and spend them in a specified catalogue which I am a part of. The company also supports a local school for the disabled so are always looking for volunteers to raise money and awareness; I plan to be part of the next fundraiser. The Sales team run yoga/fitness classes 3 days a week which is open to all WB employees.

  • 9. Would you recommend WarnerMedia to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's an amazing company to work for, they really look after their staff and the rewards aren't just physical. The Warner Bros. brand will look amazing on anyone's CV so even if you odn't get to stay for as long as you want, it won't be hard to find another job with them backing you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to WarnerMedia?
  • Be yourself, be honest and be patient. The application process is straightforward and they got back to me within a couple of weeks. The assessment day can be quite daunting but if you get down to the final few it becomes a lot more relaxed in the interviewing stage and you really get the chance to show off your skillset.
