  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a mechanical engineering apprentice that has chosen to go down a CAD Pathway. My day-to-day role includes operating my teams 3D printer, developing models to be produced on the 3D Printer or in the workshop. Fixing existing CAD Models to be run through different programs. I also spend time in the workshop and lab machining components and soldering parts up.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship I have learnt lots of new skills. I had never used a machine before I came here and had minimal CAD Experience. Even after leaving the training providers, I am still learning new things all the time and developing the skills I was taught in the training centre.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the work that I do, and working for DSTL has enabled me to work in areas that I wouldn't have had a chance to if I had worked for different companies, as there is such a large variety of work taking place. I am always busy, but with enjoyable tasks and work in a really good team that are always happy to help if when I need it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dstl?
  • I feel like all the work that I produce is appreciated by DSTL adn I am able to get involved in a large variety of tasks.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is a well organised programme with your time split in 3 month blocks between the company and the training provider. All of the basic things we need to know when we go out into the company is taught by the training provider.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a good amount of support from the training provider, even when not working directly with the people there.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, in both work and personal life.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary easily covers my living costs, but everyone can always do with a pay rise!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • With DSTL, I have had the chance to go out to a large number of STEM events at schools and cadet camps. This has really helped to improve my communication skills, as I now feel confident standing up and talking in front of a large group of people.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes

  • I feel that DSTL is a really good place to work with lots of perks, interesting work and lots of support for all employees.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • If people were applying to work at DSTL I would say that they need to try and find out as much about the company as possible even though it is difficult, as it was certainly a surprise to me when I found out just some of the stuff that went on during my interview and that carries on to my day-today job.
