  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Advanced Technical Apprentice with Cummins Engine Company Ltd, I am currently completing my first year of the apprenticeship which encounters a full year at South West Durham Training full time. Everyday is different at college as you rotate around different aspects of engineering in 13 week blocks, this includes work such as Electrical, Fabrication & Welding, Milling and Turning plus much more! With this I am completing BTEC work on a Monday which covers theory such as Maths, Mechanical Principles etc. As part of a team we constructed a Ti-Fighter log burner in Fabrication & Welding, this included the design, assembly and finish of the overall piece.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Within each 13 week block at College I learn different skills that can be used in everyday living and within my job role. Within the Mechanical Maintenance rotation it helped me learn on how I can take apart different machines learning how they operate in order to complete a task, for example a horizontal milling machine. I also learnt the key safety features of a machine such as the lock out tag out system.
