  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is in resource & demand within Resilience & Continuity in technology where I support the management and prioritisation of work across the team to ensure all skills and resources required are met. I have been responsible for ensuring team members are trained on new/ updated processes/systems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt valuable communication skills and the importance of delivery of communication. I have also learnt a lot of background processes which go on that allow the bank to provide their products and services to our customers. I have also developed on my presenting skills, as part of my role I have shared my knowledge and supported the roll out the new usage of systems in my team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the apprenticeship programme I am on, although It was not my decision on what team I was allocated to, I definitely have been put into the one that I feel I can develop within most. Its a great team and I get good support especially if I need help with work towards my apprenticeship course work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I feel valued within RBS, I am given a lot of responsibility for an apprentice and I get ownership of a lot of work which I get regular feedback and development opportunities on through weekly 1-2-1's with my manager. I have also been involved in a few projects with other apprentices external to my team and given a lot of responsibility as apprentices.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured in that I am aware of all deadlines and things are communicated really well from my assessor. However I do feel some of the task books are irrelevant based upon my role as a lot of them are more aimed at roles that are customer facing.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I get a lot of support from my training provider, BPP. I am in regular communication with them and have regular reviews. I also get feedback on any of my submitted course work where I can make improvements or changes after my work has been submitted by deadline and reviewed.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from RBS through my apprenticeship; I am regularly kept up to date with new information regarding my programme and given new opportunities to develop myself through training days. I’m also supported by my team, as there are several apprentices in the team everyone is really understanding and always willing to spend more time with you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary covers my travel, social and daily costs and as I live at home still this is fine. I would struggle to live independently on the apprenticeship salary. The benefits RBS provide to colleagues are good, I have private health care which comes off my monthly pay and you also get a lot of salary package options.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I've had a lot of out of day to day work opportunities, at the end of 2017 all my intakes apprentices and grads took part if a 6 week challenge to pitch a solution for sustainability within the bank to heads of the business. I've also been involved in volunteering opportunities and before Christmas I had a day out of office to help out with sorting the cash for kids mission Christmas donations along with other colleagues.customers but also what it wants for its employees. I'd advice everyone to get involved on assessment days as its a safe environment and allows the assessors to choose what team is best suited to you.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Really good apprenticeship programme, great opportunities to learn and develop. I feel its a great stepping stone from school, for those who want to earn but also want a qualification and experience. I'd highly recommend, there's a wide variety of apprenticeship types and roles you can do which is really good for those who may have a particular interest.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • I applied for the role as I was already working for RBS in Ulster bank within the Arrears Support Unit. This had gave me the experience to understand RBS colleague values and expectations and I would really recommend anyone applying for a similar programme to do their research on not only what the company wants for its customers but also what it wants for its employees. I'd advice everyone to get involved on assessment days as its a safe environment and allows the assessors to choose what team is best suited to you.
