  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • First Year: Rotations around key functions within the business. Second Year: Maintenance Department - (electrical focus)assisting engineers with breakdowns and preventative maintenance. Third Year: Maintenance Department - independently working on breakdowns and preventative maintenance with involvement in manufacturing engineering projects. Fourth Year: Product Planning Department - working within teams to develop the current products.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Had a variety of training within the maintenance department such as IPAF, Abrasive Wheels, Confined Space, Permit Writing, High Voltage Awareness. Also a range of Cummins internal training such as Project Management. Lots of skills learned in the Maintenance department from current Engineers with lots of experience in a range of fields.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my work and more so the people that I work with. The valuable experience of the people within my working teams is what has developed my knowledge to where I stand today.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Cummins?
  • I feel valued by Cummins in general but more valued by certain aspects and departments of the business than others. Recognition of what other departments and areas of the business do can be underestimated.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program was reasonably well structured initially with the initial training, induction, and studies. Support has always been available throughout the apprenticeship. There has been a slight lack of future direction.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • In general our training provider (Grantham College) was good with support from knowledgeable tutors. However the college has not always been proactive when sorting out issues with staffing and this did impact the learning provided and cause periods of high unnecessary workloads.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is available from the business whenever it is requested. Closer mentoring may have been useful early on.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary has been good and matches similar apprenticeships in the same field of work. Closer to the end of the apprenticeship, work responsibility can be much higher; however the pay rises do not match this perfectly.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company does have some social events on every so often, and also offers the opportunity for people to help the community whilst being paid. There would be room for more social events / team building / enrichment activities.

  • Yes

  • There are good opportunities within Cummins to transition around the business. The wages are competitive and it is a globally recognised company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • Research and understand the fundamentals of the company and appreciate the work that it carries out.
