  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a mechanical and electrical engineering apprentice working for Thames water. I work on an advanced clean water treatment plant and the work I do is so varied every day. I learn a new skill every single day as there is so much equipment to work on

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a huge amount of skills that I can carry into so many areas of engineering. I work on a combination of both mechanical and electrical skills on some of the most advanced water treatment equipment available.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy coming to work every day. I feel like I am testing myself and feel rewarded by solving problems and gaining new skills. I have met lots of new people and made many friends while working for Thames water

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Thames Water?
  • I feel really valued by everyone at Thames water. Everyone from my mentor to line manager are really supportive for me and give me the chance to put across my ideas and put them into practise.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is really well organised. There is plenty of support from a range of people in different job roles in Thames water. We have continued excellent support from activate apprenticeships for our log books and college work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Activate offer constant online support for college work and log books. They then travel out to site every 4-6 weeks for a personal meeting where we can discuss and help we need to complete the apprenticeship.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support from a range of people at Thames water. From my mentor the my line manager I can ask anyone for support and they are always willing to help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Compared to other apprenticeships I researched Thames water offered a really competitive salary which improves every year throughout the apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have been given the chance to take part in a range of charity work outside of Thames water to raise money for water aid. These are always really fun events where I meet new people from the company.

  • 9. Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend the Thames water apprenticeship to anyone who wants to get into engineering. You will learn loads of skills in the workplace which are further developed in both a level 3 and level 4 college course. The Thames water is seen highly in the engineering industry and will I’ve you lots of opportunities both inside and outside of Thames water.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
  • Research that mechanical and electrical engineering is what you really want to do. The course requires a lot of work and commitment but if you are willing to put the work in you can achieve great things.
