1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a tax apprentice. The job primarily entails preparing tax returns, however; once the busy period is over, I predominantly do work to prepare for the next tax cycle. This includes updating files, ensuring all information is up to date, contacting clients for information and any other administrative work that comes up along the way.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My professional writing skills have improved vastly. Whether I'm writing an email to a client or a letter, I have seen a noticeable improvement since I first started. I have also developed my presentation skills together with my excel skills. College and internal courses help improve my understanding of certain tax aspects which in turn has helped my development within the workplace when completing tasks.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

It is an enjoyable programme during the busy period, however; when it has calmed down, it is difficult to find work to do. Most of the work done during this period is predominantly administrative work in preparation of the new tax year.

4. How valued do you feel by Smith & Williamson?

I do feel valued. Managers and other senior members of staff are always willing to provide praise when you deserve it as well as constructive criticism. I do feel senior members of staff appreciate the role I play and do make me feel as though I am an important member of the team.

5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well organised. The firm emphasise to us that there's always help of required. For example, when studying for one of my exams, I was struggling and asked for some help. A senior member of staff then organised a number of sessions during lunch to help go over areas of study that I had been struggling with. Help is always offered and managers to check to see how you are doing with your work load.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

Support was provided whenever asked. College was helpful and the tutor provided his email so that if we had any question on revision topics, we were able to contact him.

6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support from employer was very helpful. I was provided support by a senior member of staff during lunch in the months coming up to my exam. These sessions were extremely helpful and helped iron out areas where I struggled to understand as well as giving me exam tips.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

As I live at home, it is very much a standard and satisfactory starting salary for my position. As exams are passed, the salary does increase at a good rate which helps for incentive.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

In my department, there aren't as many department events or activities compared to other departments. However, there are regular drinks events as well as summer and Christmas parties. There are younger members in the department as the years progress which in turn is helping opportunities grow for events outside of work.

9. Would you recommend Smith & Williamson to a friend?

9b. Why?

From the first minute I started working here, I felt as though everyone was very welcoming. Everyone is always happy to help and understand that there is a learning curve.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Smith & Williamson?

Don't be afraid to talk to your colleagues. Work is a lot more pleasant if you like the people you work with.
