  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently a Trainee planner at Laing o rouke which means I attend day release university while working across 4 different sites over 4 days in the week. On a day to day basis I collect progress from the different contractors working on site and generate progress reports for the different sites weekly, along with this I have now undertaken the responsibility to mark up the progress myself on my own walk arounds.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed skills both from training courses and from experience, I have attended the head office to undergo excel advanced training and synchro training which is supported by asta power project training and navisworks training from my colleagues. The main skill that I have developed is my ability to communicate effectively as being a planner this is crucial.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been eased into the company and I manage to stay on top of my university work via the support network that I am provided with in the workplace. The company has a very friendly culture which allows me to be myself in the workplace along with the fact that I know if I need help everyone would try their hardest to help me or point me in the right direction.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • I have now taken on responsibilities for two different site which lets me know that I am a valuable resource to the project along with this my line manager is very supportive in letting me know when I have done well and in general making me feel like a member of the team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I attended a three day induction to ease me into the company and allow me to understand the companies values in more detail, my line manager constantly keeps me busy with work that I can see is valuable and useful for the project, along with this every 3 months I have a review to ensure I am progressing and every six months there is a meet up with the other students of my year.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive training predominantly from my line manager but I can receive guidance to a range of other people. An example of this is where I was assigned a mechanical engineering task from university so I consulted two of the mechanical engineers from two sites which run me through everything I needed to know to understand the task.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have my own HR advisor which I can consult with any problem and she will point me in the right direction for some specialist help. Along with this my manager is really helpful in showing me who to talk to and in some cases retrieving information for me. The support network is very strong as I know I could literally ask anyone for help and I know they would try their hardest to genuinely help me .

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am offered an amazing salary with all my expenses reimburse no matter my location and my university paid with other additional benefits. This means that everything I earn is for myself as I only have to pay out petrol and rent other than this. Additionally I am offered help with anything ranging from eye tests being paid for to childcare vouchers.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I am invited to company events regularly form a variety of locations, along with this there are many social events set up from site to site ranging from simply going out for a bite to eat to 5 aside football teams. I am currently registered to go and assist the school and college leaver teams recruitment day next week where I an talk about my experience face to face with potential applicants.

  • Yes

  • Amazing company that sees the potential in people and invests in this, staff are treated well and help with anything inside or outside of work is always available.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • The main piece of advice I can give is research, the more you understand about your desired function the more you will get out of the training. Be honest because if you are weak in some skill areas you will not be penalized for this you will be supported.
