  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Assistant Relationship Manager. Roles is varied due to customer interactions on the phone and by email on a daily basis to manage the relationship with customers and action their requests. Many internal interactions daily due to handing of tasks for completion. Interactions are usually chasing colleagues to ensure tasks are completed within SLAs for the customer. I like that I can manage my tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Professional Bankers Certificate. Organisational, communication, time-management. No other internal training courses or external courses attended due to lack of time and flexibility around Assistant Relationship Manager role. I would prefer to be able to attend customer meetings and develop face to face interactions with customers. I have learnt my role and undertake this fully whilst completing my apprenticeship, which is great experience. However, I would like to have more time to spend developing my qualifications and skills to work towards my career aspirations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working with the people on my team, they are all very supportive and happy to help when I need it. However, the role is not what I expected. Also as an apprentice on a clerical wage, I did not expect to undertake the role in full whilst still completing my apprenticeship, especially as there is no Assistant Relationship Manager Role available for me to apply for now I am close to completing my course. I would enjoy my programme more if I could have spent more time focusing on the apprenticeship and my development and learning.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I know that I am appreciated by my manager. However, I feel that I am being paid a clerical wage despite for over 6 months undertaking the Assistant Relationship Manager role in full which is a Lower Appointed grade role. I feel as though I am expected to undertake the role in full which means I do not have time to focus on gaining further qualifications and skills both internally and externally.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured beginning with induction which was a great way to introduce us to the other apprentices in the area. Training was made up of shadowing mostly. We undertake regular e-learning modules to ensure we are trained in the regulatory requirements and the internal policies that we follow to adhere by these regulations. Regular meetings are also in place to meet with the team and reviews scheduled monthly with my Line Manager.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Tutor is not always easily contactable. Lack of communication to us that BPP's emails have been down so they have not received emails. But she has been understanding and rearranged deadlines due to a period of sick leave I had.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my Line Manager is great, he supports me with completing my taskbooks when I require help. I struggled to take my time as I undertook the Assistant Relationship Manager role fully being aligned to two managers since I passed my Professional Bankers Certificate Exam so my Line Manager has helped me work towards my deadlines by ensuring I take allocated study time on a weekly basis.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have a child so I use the majority of my wage to pay for child care. This is something I understood when applying for the apprenticeship, however it has been a great opportunity to gain a qualification and experience in the Banking Industry. The Select account is great as it enables me to buy childcare vouchers, life insurance and pay in to a pension fund for when I retire.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • No, I have been to one external networking event for young professionals, which I really enjoyed and would like to experience more of. There are come voluntary initiatives that we are invited to attend such as volunteering in schools, however these are all based in areas such as London, Edinburugh and Birmingham. This means that they are not initiatives I could attend for a half day or day as they are too far to travel for a short amount of time. I think you have to be more proactive in obtaining opportunities outside of work such as volunteering at charity events.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Select account and employee benefits are great, I pay in to a pension fund monthly and I have life insurance and disability care options through this account. I also have a great working routine Mon-Fri 9am-5pm which means my daughter can attend nursery whilst I work. I have child care vouchers from my select account which makes these more affordable. My colleagues are good, it has been great to meet my colleagues and gain great working relationships.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • Application process is longer than you may initially think so persevere with the process. I had to undertake Literacy and Numeracy assessments online as part of the application process which I wasn't expecting. I enjoyed the telephone interview, followed a few weeks later by the face to face formal interview. It is good to prepare for these using the information provided to you during the application.
