My job role is vehicle test engineer when I am at plant but for my first year, which I am currently undertaking, I am a full time college student. Day to day this involves practical teaching and assessments in a workshop environment and academic assessments revolving around engineering topics in the classroom.
All the skills I have learnt in the workshop are new to me. These include working around an engine bay and doing a visual inspection of a vehicle.
I am enjoying the programme very much at the moment and it can only improve as I begin to work towards my degree in applied engineering.
I feel greatly valued by JLR, as do all other apprentices. They keep us up to date with what is going on within the business and pay us well.
The programme is well organised and structured. There is a clear structure in place for my 6 year programme that I fully understand.
All the support you need is provided by college. As long as when you need help you actively seek it, members of staff and tutors are more than happy to help.
If you need support you must seek it from the business. If you do seek it then it is readily available and they'll do everything they can to support you.
It is impossible to complain about the salary. It is a very good wage for an apprentice and it more than meets my costs.
Yes plenty of opportunities are available outside of work. An example is all apprentices were encouraged to join IMechE and they offer a few events a moth that revolve around mechanical engineering.
Yes
It is a very strong, rapidly growing company. The car industry is currently undergoing a huge shift from mechanics to electrics so there is plenty of future employment opportunities within the company. It is very well paid and well recognised by other companies.
It is not all about how good your grades are. Apprentices are chosen first on their behaviours and attitudes. You should try to showcase these on assessment centre days.
