  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as a research project engineer on drive transfer and electric driveline projects. This involves updating project tracking documents, generating data for reviewing concepts, and interacting with suppliers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills such as simulation with specialist software. This has been used to analyse concept technologies. I have also been trained in EV safety to enable working on HV systems. I have also been trained in safe on road driving to enable me to drive company vehicles.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my programme. I am challenged most days and find that I can decide what projects I work on to match my skills and where I want to develop. The academic side has become more challenging this year as I have started my degree course. It is teaching me to manage my time as I am now kept very busy!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?
  • I feel very valued by JLR, I am continuously surprised at the reception I get from other people in the business. I feel that my opinions are listened to and my work is looked at in the same way as any other engineer. This mostly come from my department rather than the apprenticeship team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured for the first year, but as you spend more time in your workplace, the structure is more dependent on your line manager and the apprentice to decide on the best route to take. Some apprentices may find this difficult as if you sit back you will not do much. But for motivated individuals this is very rewarding.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Support from the training provider is good. I don't have any other university experience to reference this from but I feel that on the whole I can get support if I need it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support is available from my employer, I have at least 1 1:1 a week with a supervisor or mentor and then every 6 weeks with a work based learning manager. These always make sure that I am comfortable in what I am doing. When I have a manager I will be able to continue to discuss my career progression.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Salary is excellent considering I have my tuition paid for. The cost of living around some of the JLR sites can be quite substantial due to high rents, however the benefits are that you can live around other apprentices and colleagues. The salary progression is good with increases every six months if you are on track.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work there are some opportunites yes. They are more for people who want to search them out rather than actively promoted. However, in september I took part in the JLR challenge. This is an event for orienteering/walking/hiking that takes place over a weekend. This is without a doubt the best out of work experience I have had at JLR and would hope that it was made compulsory for everyone. I also take part in some go-karting trophies within my department.

  • 9. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Good salary, varied opportunities, respect from other engineers. There is lots of support available and in almost all cases, the people around you want the best outcome for you. There are also lots of challenges the be had if you go out and get them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Read up on the behaviours you will be assessed against in your assessment centre. These continue throughout the apprenticeship so it is good to have them in the back of your mind when you are interviewed. I would also say you should make sure to focus on doing engineering outside of you daily studies as this is looked upon very well.
