  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a corporate communications trainee, on a day to day basis this involves Communicating with journalists and PR agencies alike from around the world, putting them in contact with relevant people within the business and organising interviews, all to generate media coverage for the firm. I also do some work with the Internal comms department, answering relevant emails regarding the promotion of events or big employee changes within the firm, this could involve delegating to the relevant person, or potentially sending out communications (such as emails) firmwide or to a specific group or people.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely been given the chance to develop my communication skills in terms of knowing my audience and how to communicate in a corporate environment. I have also learnt a large variety of skills such as delegation, persuasion, and presentation. The amount of training given to me as part of this traineeship has been excellent, I have learned skills in Time management, networking, presenting, business writing and persuasiveness that have proved pivotal in the day to day realities of my job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I very much enjoy the programme I am on, I feel as if I have been given the perfect balance of responsibility and guidance, allowing me to really develop my skills within the workplace and learn more about the industry I was so interested before I joined. The training provided is excellent, I am given a good level of respect for what I do by my colleagues, and I have excellent experiences which I am sure will help me as I develop my career.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Schroders?
  • One of my favourite parts of the programme I am on is how valued I feel within the business. The city can be a very scary place to start an entry level career, and I feel that I have been respected and valued from the very beginning of my time at Schroders. This is demonstrated from the way I am treated by my colleagues as well as senior members of the business, the responsibility I am given in my role and the level of trust I know that those above me have placed in me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The traineeship programme is very well structured in terms of finding the right balance between training and time on the job, I feel that this has worked really well for allowing us to settle into our teams and individual roles, whilst also giving us the structure we needed at an entry level, I feel that this further builds the strength of balance between guidance and responsibility.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Through the traineeship, my training provider is essentially Human Resources and the board with whom we sit the Investment Foundations Programme. From the first day I started, I have felt that those responsible for the trainees within the human resources department have been there for me whenever I have needed support or guidance within my job role and the traineeship programme. The exam board have been really helpful in terms of delivering the support needed to properly prepare for the exam, with loads of free online resources etc. I have also found that my mentor within my department has been extremely useful in terms of answering any questions I have day to day, no matter how small and without judgement.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Schroders has been very helpful in terms of providing support with anything I have needed throughout the apprenticeship, the HR team have been consistently helpful with any questions I have about the trainee programme as well at any training I have received etc., they have also arranged for me to have a mentor from the previous years group of trainees, which has been really useful having a friendly face from around the business. My managers have also been very helpful in answering any questions I have without judgement, as well as being there to help me with anything that may be new.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • For an entry level career, I am aware that my salary is very good compared to others within the market, and the amount of benefits do nearly account for any shortcomings in terms of salary. However, I would argue that it should be slightly higher when compared to other programmes/ other job roles for the work that those of us on the trainee programme are currently doing.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have been given loads of opportunities outside work that I would not have experienced before if I had not taken up this job role. These include the opportunity to travel, attend private events, such as the opportunity to meet an astronaut at a private dinner, as well as being given fantastic opportunities to network. We have also been given the opportunity to attend a lot of industry insight events, which beyond allowing us to network, has taught us a lot about the industry in which we are working beyond our job roles.

  • 9. Would you recommend Schroders to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Schroders to a friend because since August (when I started), I have looked forward to coming into work every day. Seeing the hard work that people have put into encouraging me to do well, as well as the respect I have been given from the very beginning has made my job extremely rewarding, and has certainly contributed to the enjoyment I have got out of working in what is such a classically difficult industry to work. I feel that I have been given the very best start at developing my career, and my confidence and professionalism has been able to grow in ways I didn’t think possible, and I have made friends that I think I will have for a very long time.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schroders?
  • My advice for those applying to Schroders would be to go in with passion, and everything else will come with you. I was so scared to apply for this job because I knew what a daunting industry finance can be, but I did know that I loved PR and I think this must have come across in my interview. The people at Schroders are all passionate, so as long as you show this, they will be willing to help with anything else.
