  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Job title is currently Digital Marketer, on the apprenticeship scheme I spend 20% of my time in training and the remaining time working along side my team and within the wider company. As an apprentice you are given the same responsibilities as everyone else at work which allows you to gain valuable experience as well as a sense of independence. My role is primarily project driven. Daily tasks might include research, analytics or collaborating with other teams within the business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Every day i learn new things, whether it be technical or social. It's challenging being one of few apprentices in a large global company but every day i pick up new things just through speaking to people, sitting in on meetings and working with new people. Schroders showers you with opportunities to develop, there are mandatory training sessions which need to be completed over the two years but there are also external courses which are paid in full by your company. As a digital marketer i've learned how to build pages using a CMS, optimise our search rankings, use various online tools to analyse our sites performance and the processes behind launching marketing campaigns online.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy coming to work every day to see the people and to challenge myself. My team have all been welcoming from the start which has helped me settle in very fast, i've made more friends through events and actual work. The company culture is different to what i imagined an office job to be like, everyone is just like you and have their own lives which makes it more of a family than just work. I always pictures offices to be dull and robotic but it's just the opposite.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Schroders?
  • I have weekly catch ups with my team and my manager to find out how i'm getting on and receive feedback. It's easy to feel small in a large company but if you build the right connections then you can feel at home within Schroders. All you have to do is show that you're keen and interested and people will appreciate your efforts. I'm always being asked to come along to meetings and my manager insures i'm involved with as many projects as i can. Overall i feel valued within the company and my team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The actual training provider is hosted by an external company called Arch. All of my training and assessments come through them. Schroders provides internal training roughly once a month and my manager and work buddy are my form of support. Being in a team means i always have help there if i need it however, the buddy system implemented by Schroders means that even without a team i have someone to talk to and receive advice from. If I was unhappy I would be able to tell my buddy and not feel like my job was at risk. There is a good structure between work and studying, Schroders is fairly flexible in that if i need to use one day a week to study or catch up on training videos, i can do this.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have monthly meetings with my advisor from Arch, he supports me in the collation of my work and guides me through the apprenticeship. I haven't started the second phase of online training yet however it's all online meeting i can access it from work or home. It would be useful to have more support and guidance but i understand the qualification is also a test of my independence and own ability.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager and I have a good relationship, we have weekly catch ups and regular contact at work, any issues that I have are taken to her and I’m supported with anything i need. I haven't been in much contact with HR however, I am aware that they organise training and events for the apprentices. My Buddy also works in a similar role to me so we can share ideas and he can help me when I need it. Everyone in the office is helpful which means its always accessible.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I'm paid a high salary for an apprentice because of the cost of working in London. I made the decision to live at home in Hertfordshire which saves me 60% of my salary. Schroders offer a loan for annual season ticket holders which means I pay £300 a month in travel, this however varies from £150-450 depending on the distance and difficulty of your commute. Social cost is expensive in London, food and drink is generally higher than most places in the country, however being prepared and making your own lunch etc. can save a lot of money.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many events ranging from sports to volunteering. Schroders offers a volunteering incentive which allow you to volunteer during working hours and pay £20 an hour towards a charity of your choosing. I have also been allowed to take time off to give blood and offered the opportunity to go to many out of work events. As Schroders is a global company they also offer most employees the opportunity to work abroad for 3-6 months in Hong Kong or New York.

  • 9. Would you recommend Schroders to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Schroders has many opportunities and benefits to working here. I would definitively insist on others to join the scheme as either an apprentice or a trainee. I'm glad i didn't go to uni as i made the right chocie in coming here, i've never had a single regret.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schroders?
  • Schroders are looking for the best but not necessarily the brightest, it's about your personality and willingness to work. Show you are keen throughout all steps of the application. Don't be afraid to show who you are and express yourself, Schroders wants passionate, fun and determined people. If i could go back and give myself any advice i'd say be comfortable and willing. They want to see that you can work in a team, learn new things and bring value to the company.
