  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day varies weather you are one placement or university. On placement, you will be learning on the job somewhere within the broadcast industry. As you become more and more familiar with systems and how things work, placement supervisors may allow you to start going to jobs on your own. At uni, it is very intense. Normally in uni from 9-6 in lectures, tutorials or practicals.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working at heights awareness, manual handling, basic h&S. Currently working towards a BEng in Broadcast Engineering. Learning from antennas and propagation to IP networks to coding. Numerous weeks at BBC wood norton doing various courses

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much, I love learning on the job on placement and getting to know how the industry works and the opportunity to work in numerous teams over different companies (some placements are secondments)

  • Very, the management team do really care about your well being and how you are getting on both in and out of work and uni

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well, we have our timetable about 6months in advance, and know when we will be on placement and uni. 4 weeks of induction at the beginning to introduce you to the BBC and the scheme

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Uni is University of Salford, some lecturers understand the intensity of the course, others don't. Assessments seem to be fair. personally I prefer the placement side though

  • Lots, any issues they are there to advise and help sort out

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well. If we are at uni travel accommodation and food is covered

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Quite a few opportunities to help advertise the scheme. When at uni there's not much to do in the evenings but when on placement you have the evenings which allow me to do various volunteering roles.

  • Yes

  • Brilliant company to work for and amazing opportunity to learn on the job and get a degree


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be yourself, there is no *perfect* BBC employee. The main thing they are after is someone with some knowledge in the area you are applying. but mainly a passion and drive to work and learn and enthusiasm! Also need to know a fair bit of maths.
