  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As part of the apprenticeship you undertake 3 different 8 month placements. my first placement was working in the audience research team for design and engineering. my tasks were mainly around weekly reporting on the performance of BBC iPlayer and then other ad-hoc projects with various team members regarding technology and the BBC. I currently am in my second placement in BBC Spark, a projects team specialising in the use of lean methodologies. My role is currently in the "Hub" where i help with admin and aid the programme manager in the running of projects. I also work as an analyst on projects providing support to the projects teams in various areas of the BBC.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently working towards a degree in business management as part of the apprenticeship. I study at university every friday and from this have learnt a range of research skills. From the work side I have gained a huge amount of skills, from excel and project management, to everyday social and professional skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love the programme. The BBC is such a great place to work with the teams all being really welcoming and keen to help you get as much out of the experience as possible and help you push ahead. I've enjoyed the entire experience and the experiences you get as a result of working for the BBC, such as volunteering and working on the Children in Need appeal show.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel very valued by the BBC. Each team you are placed in really appreciate the help you give and give recognition for all the hard work you put in. Also, a common misconception is that you make the teas and coffees and that's about the extent of the role however that's not the case. You are trusted with real projects and responsibilities that impact the BBC.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • On the BBC side of things the structure is great. You are fully trained with a lot of support throughout the programme however its important to still remember that you have to support yourself and take the initiative to ask for work for example if there isn't much on. In terms of university, organisation can be quite poor however it is manageable if you go in with the headset you will have to chase and organise much of it yourself.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot of the university side you have to organise yourself so it is important to go in with the mindset that you will be proactive and this learning really is self managed and self disciplined. However, there is help available academically but you have to ask for it - unlike school or college it is not just given

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • You have a BBC scheme manager who is available to help, alongside your placement manager and the team members you are placed with. Everyone is really supportive and willing to help you with any issues. whether it is something big or small there is someone around willing to help you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well. I am lucky enough to still live with my parents but I believe what we are paid is more than fair, especially considering that our degrees are being paid for, along with a qualification from the chartered institute of management. Other apprentices on the scheme have moved down to London and are finding it fine living in London on the salary we receive.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. Within the BBC there are plenty of opportunities, some are advertised and some you have to find yourself. I have volunteered for the Children in Need appeal show and worked as a runner for the green room, a completely new experience for me and a chance to do something different to what I usually do on a day to day basis. I have also volunteered as an extra on BBC comedy W1A which was a lot of fun and again, a completely new experience.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it is a great scheme overall and the BBC itself provides you with invaluable experience that would be hard to find anywhere else. The fact you get your degree paid for you AND you get paid on top is amazing. And then the fact you finish withing 2 years is just the cherry on top. It just seems like the best of ALL worlds and potentially that it is too good to be true, but it IS true.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Make sure you do apply, don't let nerves deter you as you have nothing to lose! Also, if you make it to interview stage just be yourself as you have no idea what they are looking for and its better to be a genuine character than something you are not. To be honest, if I was applying again I would have liked to have been told that once you work at the BBC the dress code is MOSTLY casual dependent on department. Even jeans are allowed! Also, and more importantly, that working, studying, having a social life and not breaking down IS possible, we do it everyday!
