  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Business Management Higher Degree Apprentice with the BBC. This means that I am completing a degree alongside 4 days full time work with the BBC. I currently work within BBC Content as one of my three eight month placements around the BBC. This involves networking with commissioners and production companies that help to produce content for the BBC channels

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My apprenticeship includes obtaining a BA Hons degree in Business Management and a Chartered Management qualification in Management and Leadership. This is all undertaken on an accelerated 2 year programme. As well as these academic and professional qualifications I have learnt personal skills which will be transferable for the remainder of my career such as networking, confidence and business knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This programme has allowed me to experience a company I never thought I would work at, let alone starting my career at the age of 19 at. I have met some incredible professionals who have all started similar to me, who understand and support the course. I have been able to work on programmes such as Children in Need and Strictly Come Dancing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • Very, its a large corporation and as long as you fall into the right placements you will have lots of team members to rely on for support and who will appreciate your work. The roles are made for business needs so the team you are placed in will always need your involvement in work based projects.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is full on but is organised well. Having a small intake of 7 you get personal help from the programme leader and small university groups to support you. You get study leave days before exams to allow you to revise and mostly the teams are supportive when you need to take a bit of time out of the day to focus on your uni work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • You receive a tutor from the university, a student liaison, a mentor at the BBC and your programme leader for points of contact. Both the BBC and the university set out induction days and training to integrate you into the business. The BBC programme manager is on hand all the time for questions and to support you if you feel like you have a lot on. The advice given has always been good.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Programme manager is hand on in making sure that you are settled and aiding any issues that may arise. It is easy to contact the HR team through email or phone and they are prompt with responses. You are allocated a mentor to help your career journey as well as the option to seek your own mentor in a particular area if you would like more help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Dependent on your living circumstances the pay is ok. I travel outside of London and have to pay a 5k train ticket per year so significantly cuts my pay. However if you are lucky enough to be living at home in London the pay is good. Best to consider what your travel and accommodation options are in comparison to the pay.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • It is definitely a hard schedule to manage. Work days for me include 1.5 hour travel as well so my days are long and university is also a long day on the Friday. I prefer to concentrate on my university work instead of taking part in any clubs however I still make time for the gym and a social life but you need to be organised.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The scheme itself in my opinion is better than attending an ordinary university. You get a real kick-start in career experience, earn a decent salary and graduate in 2 years rather than 3 with no debt. Working in such a large corporation teaches you a lot about working life and readies you for the world afterwards.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Put yourself out there. If on the assessment day don't shy away from talking, be yourself and network with individuals. I would have been like to be told that its not a stressful process and not to get too worked up in the interviewing stages. Being yourself and being confident will do you well!
