  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Business Management Higher/Degree Apprentice at the BBC. I am employed by the BBC, who fund my BBC roles and university. I work Monday to Thursday and I attend university on a Friday. The scheme is 2 years. I study a degree of Business Management BA Hons at Pearson Business School as well as the Chartered Manager qualification organised by the Chartered Management Institute alongside rotational placements at the BBC. My past and current placements include: BBC Marketing Audiences and BBC Studios. Working in advertising, marketing, finance and business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Resilience, organisation Confidence and communication skills are the most improved skills developed on this scheme. Having these traits I came to realise are imperative to juggling doing a full time degree alongside pretty much a full time job. Therefore having these traits will help with the process. Also determination and passion and being able to show that effectively is also key to self preservation, growth and self-development!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Honestly this is the best role I have ever had. It is equally the most difficult due to the work load but it is all worth it. Being able to experience different areas of the BBC is a wonderful experience. Feedback from placmenent managers and co workers have all been that they wished they had that chance to do so. It gives our scheme an advantage and our knowledge makes us more rounded as workers. It is very rare to experience so much of such a large well known company who are willing to invest their time and funds on you to develop yourself and learn as much as possible! The perks are amazing too! I have been lucky to attend Strictly Come Dancing BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge BBC One Show Been on W1A.... the list is endless. What I like also is that the BBC is laid back and flexible as well as being highly social! There is something for everyone from gym clubs, to knitting clubs and great discounts nationally also.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel valued on the most part. Placement teams are very encouraging and treat apprentices as part of the team which is highly important. However with BBC being so large some departments especially in my experience who have not had an "apprentice" before let alone know what they are useful for can be initially can be challenging but managing expectations and educating co workers and managers on the scheme has proved to be useful for understanding.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Training is extensive. 2-3 weeks before role and university start with training on the bbc in general, team building and mentoring sessions. Throughout the course there are many opportunities for networking and our training involves these workshops and skills based interactions.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Much higher than normal apprentice rate. Still a bit of a push in London but it is easily doable. But perks include pay rise each year.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Plenty to socialise- parties, drinks, sports, events, opportunities to see shows. A lot of events for every kind of person.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The exposure, experience, opportunity and career progression. This role will open so many doors. The experience is truly amazing and one not many people get in any life time. That will give you an edge and also develop you as a person! So go for it :)

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • It does not matter if you have previous experience or not. BBC look at your skill set are you adaptable do you adhere to the BBC Values? Do you believe in the BBC? If so why? being able to show your passion for the subject and the BBC is imperative. Just think why should the BBC invest in you? Are you going to work hard and take the opportunity with both hands or is it just another application?.... Good Luck!
