  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role within the BBC is currently in Global Insights. This is market research on specific brands within the BBC (Dr Who, BBC Earth, Sherlock etc.) This is devised, conducted and analysed in a variety of ways using surveys/social media trackers and other tools. On a typical day my job role can be quite varied; I could be devised a market research survey or analysing large amounts of data already collected and using this to generate reports and recommendations on the future of the BBC's most loved brands.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • This particular placement has been invaluable in developing my research and data analysis skills. This fits well with the university work that goes alongside the work-based part of the apprenticeship as the degree is very heavy on independent research based study.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has so far been excellent, and with two more placements to go I feel very confident these will develop my skills in other areas of business in order to create a well rounded level of competence for future leadership in a multinational business.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I feel my ambition is not only supported but encouraged and that if required, I am confident future requests for exposure to different business areas would be granted.

    10/10

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured to give you a broad experience of the corporation as a whole. The programme is devised to be an 80/20 split: 80% of the week at work and 20% of the week at university. There are three separate work based placements over two years in different areas, in order to develop a wide range of knowledge, experience and skill.

    10/10

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training provider understands that a large part of the week is work-based and adapts very well to that in order to extract maximum learning.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Since day 1 I have received all the support I have asked for from the provider. The attitude is one of supporting ambition and pointing you in the right direction as opposed to putting you in one place and keeping you there.

    10/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is competitive and fair, however, this will always be overshadowed by the expense of London.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • With both the BBC and university there are many ways to get involved in other activities. BBC Club offers a wide range of social activities and the students union always have things going on. It really is just a matter of putting yourself out there.

    10/10

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The professional support in the workplace and free tuition for a degree will set me up to be extremely competitive in the future job market, which is invaluable at a time when careers with prospects are becoming less and less. And at the end of the day... its pretty fun working for the BBC. Why wouldn't I recommend it?

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be creative. The application and assessment process is tough! The hardest part is standing out from the crowd. There will be people with equally impressive CV's; so its about making your application the one they remember.
