I worked at Cardiff University for a few days to get a feel for how the university works. I had a range of responsibilities, from doing administrative work, to helping out at Open Days. Consequently, I would have to show people around, answer any questions they had, and redirect them to appropriate members of staff if I was unable to answer any of their queries.
I have learnt a lot of new skills. Coming to work at Cardiff University, I was a bit unsure what to expect. However, I was given a few training courses before each new thing I ended up doing at the university. Consequently, I have developed a range of communication, organisational, and administrative skills. These include using Excel and spreadsheets.
I really enjoyed my programme at Cardiff University. The work was enjoyable, with really great shifts. My team was always amazing, normally being some of the students at the university. It really helped to give me somewhat of an insight into the university life at Cardiff, and I honestly could not have asked for a better place to work.
I felt really valued by Cardiff University. The staff were always kind and helpful, showing me how to do things if I was uncertain. Additionally, I was offered regular free lunches, and socials to go to after work, which made me feel included. I was also given loads of opportunities to embark on new tasks independently, giving me a chance to develop myself and prove myself to them.
The programme was incredibly well structured. I was always given a rota a week before, to make sure I knew exactly what I was doing and where I was going. I would get training no later than 2 days before my role, and I was constantly supported by everyone around me. I also was given a mentor who would meet me every other week to ensure I was fitting in properly and doing okay.
I received loads of support from each of my training providers. As aforementioned, I was given a mentor who would track and maintain my progress. She was always handy on email and the phone for anything I needed. Additionally, during my training sessions, every person training me was very friendly. They were always open to questions
I didn't really communicate directly with the university much, however they did provide me with loads of other people to interact with in regards to my work. Once again, I did have a mentor, and she was incredibly supportive. The university therefore gave me an amazing group of people to help build my foundations in working with them.
The salary was amazing, especially since this was my first properly paid job. The hourly rate, especially while working a 35 hour week, was phenomenal, It more than paid for my rent and social costs. One of the massive perks of living in Cardiff is the lack of a need for using transport, since everything is walking distance. The university main campus was a 10 minute walk for me daily.
In Cardiff there are loads of opportunities outside of work. There are regular socials, and the number of clubs in Cardiff makes for an amazing night out. In the daytime, there is so much to explore as well! From Cardiff Castle, to the National Museum and Gallery (Which are all right next to each other), to the Bay (especially in summer). There are also Escape Rooms, and Mini Golf, bowling, and laser tag. There is so much to do, and it's all so close to each other. You will never be bored for even a moment.
Yes
It's an amazing opportunity, especially to give you a feel for university life. There's never a boring moment, and you will meet amazing new people. You could not ask for a better team of people to work with. Your employer will also always accommodate you. Cardiff University provides you with a range of opportunities and chances to develop new and existing skillsets.
I would tell you to be yourself, and be willing to learn. You will be interviewed, and assessed on your ability to work with people on a taster day. As long as you are dedicated, and willing to learn. you will be rewarded. Additionally, never fail to be enthusiastic and willing to learn.
