  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I worked as a work experience member for this establishment, I was provided with insight into the daily operation and management of an individual store branch as was required to help out in all sections of the store. My fellow staff were extremely helpful and open to advise and showed me the ropes with various consumer areas as well as specialist knowledge regarding the store products. I would recommend working for this company if anyone wants to get a good start on their CV or is required to do work experience during their secondary education.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learned various consumer skills such as till operation and was exposed to direct consumer interaction in sometimes pressuring situations; I had to deal with specialist requests and was required to have specialist knowledge of various products. I also was provided with insight into sales skills in order to help various consumers explore their best options and try and match relevant products to consumer demands.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This programme was enjoyable but it would have been nice to work on more abstract projects within a team environment. However, the experience provided me with valuable insight into sales culture as well as customer interaction which has helped me in later work experience.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dixons Carphone?
  • I felt fairly valued by the company, my work experience was only for a short period of time so it is hard to say that I was a central member of the team but I felt looked after for the duration of my time with the company. I got along with all my co-workers and was seen as a good help with various tasks and challenges faced.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was fairly well structured; I was given various tasks to complete throughout my time at the branch and never felt bored or unproductive. I was given various basic training for sales and customer interaction work and had various members of staff that I could go to if ever I required any help or advice. The programme was also balanced with my secondary education and I did not feel pressurised by the volume of work given to me.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider and employer was very helpful and open to any questions or queries which I had relating to my work. They were very open and friendly and also helped to introduce me to my fellow staff members and colleagues. Again, the experience was only for a short period of time but I still felt as if I was provided with the necessary support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • This programme was unpaid and informal so I cannot answer this question fully, however the branch was local and easily commutable so I did not incur any major costs during my experience. Additionally, the experience provided proved a vital addition to my CV which was a very good help. This experience was also balanced with my secondary education requirements so I did not feel like a salary was justified for my level of experience and duration of work time with the company.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Again this experience was a short internship and I was young so any company activities were off-limits to me. However, within the workplace I experienced a friendly atmosphere as well as good relationships with all my colleagues and managerial staff. I was also completing my secondary education studies during my time with the company so had to focus on this area of my life rather than social activities involved with the company I was working with for the week.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • PC World has a good culture and is a warm and friendly workplace environment which caters towards all students seeking work experience. Work experience helped me with confidence with customer interactions and has proved very useful in my later working life. Additionally, work experience proves a vital addition to any CV which helps with future opportunities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • This experience was relatively informal so I did not have to go through any official applications for my work experience; however, by showing my face at a branch rather than calling or emailing I was immediately considered for a placement due to my confidence and character in directly seeking out work opportunities. This is a valuable tip if seeking employment with Currys PC World.
